Abstract

26,040. Nance, C. W. Nov. 10. Processes and materials for treating hides and skins.-Hides are rapidly tanned by being treated with tan liquor in a vacuum high enough to boil out the water which they contain at a temperature of 60-70‹ F. They may be previously lined in a similar high vacuum. The tanning-liquor is preferably introduced in the form of a thin stream, directed against the vessel to break it into spray, and during the tannage it may be concentrated by warming the vessel or increasing the vacuum until the liquor boils. By these steps, the liquor may be concentrated and a graded tannage may be obtained without employing temperatures which would damage the leather. Alternatively, graded liquors may be introduced into the vat, or water may be used in conjunction with bark &c. placed between the hides. Vacuum apparatus as described in Specification 5325/08, [Class 71, Injectors &c.], may be used, or any other form of vacuum pan preferably having a heating-coil.
