Sound magnifying and directing appliances.- A trumpet for a loud-speaking telephone has a horizontal U-shaped portion b, of increasing cross-sectional area from the circular inlet to the rectangular outlet a, and a vertical portion c adapted to support the receiver in such a way that the smaller end of the conduit terminates behind the flaring mouth. When the receiver is applied the whole combination does not occupy a greater horizontal and vertical elevational space than the flaring mouth a. The flared end portion of the trumpet is made of wood, the U-shaped portion b of metal, and the vertical portion c may be of non-sonorous material, such as rubber, and may be ribbed as at f to impart rigidity. The portions may be joined together with the aid of interposed material such as rubber, the flared portion a being joined to the portion b as described in Specification 217,675. The flared portion a may have one side wall flat and vertical, the opposite side wall convex to the interior and vertical, the top wall convex and extending horizontally and the bottom wall flat and horizontal. Specifications 15369/15 and 220,990, [both in Class 40 (iv), Telephones &c.], also are referred to.
