Abstract

222,727. Nickson, J. A. Jan. 2, 1924. Cutting slices in succession.- A machine for automatically slicing meat of the type comprising a bottom receptacle movable towards and away from a circular revolving knife is characterized by the feature that the receptacle is made in two halves hinged together vertically whereby the receptacle can be made to release or grip the meat. One half of a circular meat receptacle 2, Fig. 3, is hinged at 27 to a sliding carriage 6, and the other half is hinged to the first at 26 and closed by a spring 28. The carriage 6 is operated by pivoted levers 12, 11, 10 off a driving spindle 9 so as to reciprocate longitudinally on ball races 7, 8 and a fixed table 5 and ther. over a rotating knife 3. Under the fixed table 5 is an adjustable plate 4, Fig. 1, of known type, which can be rotated by hand through the table 5 so as to adjust the thickness of slice. As the receptacle 2 is brought over the table 5 the bevelled end 30a of a bar attached to the hinged part 26 of the receptacle is brought into contact with an adjustable standard 31 so as to open the receptacle and release the meat to slide down on to the adjustable rest 4. A weight 34 bears on the meat but is stopped short of the knife by a cross-piece 36. On the return movement of the receptacle 2 the spring 28 closes the hinged parts to grip the meat in its passage over the knife 3. The knife is driven by a hand wheel 14, toothed gearing 16, 17, spindle 18, and bevel gears 19. In a modification, the positions of the revolving knife, the adjustable plate, and the driving gear are reversed so that the machine can be driven by the right hand and the cut slices can he removed by the left hand from a slide 38.
