Be it known that I, ALBERT C. BASSE, a
Antonio, inthe county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Bacon Slicer, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a slicing machine especially designed for use in slicing bacon or the like, the primary .object of the invention being to. rovide a machine of this Icharacter to facilltate the slicing of bacon in a manner to insure slices of predetermined thicknesses.
An important ob'ect of the invention is to provide a mac ine of this character which may be manually operated, and -one wherein the supporting member will be moved towards the rotary knife forming a part of the invention, by a slight pressure exerted thereon, by the operator.
A still'further object of the invention is the rovision of means to move the slice whic has been cut, from the machine, thereby insuring against the slice becoming damaged by the support carrying the slice rearwardly through the machine, on the reverse movement of the support.
With the foregoing'andotherf objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the inventlon resides in the combi` nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinfter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in'the recise embodiment of the invention herein isclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a side elevational vview of a Aslicing machine 'constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section 2-2 of Figure 4. Figure 3 is an elevational view illustrating the opposite side of the machine.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the machine, a strip of bacon being .positioned on the support ready for paing through the machine.
Referring to the 'drawings in detail, the
base of the machine is indicated generally' by the reference character 5 and embodies an upper plate 6 and a lower plate 7, which plates are held in spaced relation with each other by means of the metallic strips Sand `9 `which are riveted thereto, by means of the rivets l0.
The rivets 10 also afford means for securing thev bars 11 to the base, which bars are cut away to provide lateral extensions 12 that cooperate with the lateral extensions 13 of the bars 14 that are secured to the support "or carriage, to be hereinafter more fully described.
The carriage embodies a plate 15 to which the bars .14 are secured so that the carriage may move longitudinally of the base to feed the meat supported thereon to, the rotary knife. Extending upwardly from opposite.
sides of the carrlage are arms 16 that are provided with openings adjacent to the upier ends-'to accommodate the ends of the 1o 17 that actsas a support for the meat engaging block 18, there beingprovided a metallic end member 19, which is bent to provide a bearing for the block, positioned around the rod so that the meat engaging block will bev permitted to swing vertically on the rod 17.
Carried by the meat engaging block are prongs 20 that'are adapted to embed themselves in the meat or article being sliced by the machine, so that movement of the block will be transmitted to the meat, to feed 'it laterally, after a slice has been made, so
that the meat will move to a position to be e again sliced.
The reference character 2l indicates a handle Vcarried by the meat engaging block 18 which may be grasped by the hand of the operator to exert a pressure on the meat engaging block to embed the prongs in the meat so that the meat will-be held against movement while the knife is operating to cut a slice.
Forming a part of the block is a plate 22 that extends upwardly therefrom, and pro- Vides a guard to prevent the operators hand engaging they handle 21 from being cut by the knife.
In order that the slice cut` from the piece of meat mounted on the carriage, vwill be moved from the machine, a laterally extended inger 23 is provided on the carriage to move therewith, which linger includes an upwardly extended ange 23 formed with teeth along the upper edge thereof. These teeth are arranged in such a way that they will bite into the slice of bacon which has been cut by the machine and thrown into the trough 24 mounted adjacent to the inner side edge of the base. It is to be understood that when a slice of bacon or meat has been cut by the machine, the slice falls into the trough 24 with one end of the slice extended beyond the forward end of the trough or in the path offorward travel of finger 23., which as before stated removes the slice from the machine.
Arran ed adjacent to the knife, which is indicate at 25 is a guard platev26 that guards against the slices cut from the meat moving laterally into the gearing,` employed for operating the knife.
The operating mechanism is supported in the frame indicated generally by the reference character 27 on which frame are mount' ed the shafts 28 and 29, the shaft 28 being operated by means of the crank handle 30, which isoperated by the person using the machine.
Mounted on the shaft 28 is a gear 31v that meshes with the gear Wheel 32 mounted on the shaft 29, which shaft also supports the knife 25, which is of the rotary type, as
'clearlyillustrated by the drawings.
Clamps indicated at 33 are secured to the base, and provide means whereby the device may be secured to a suitable support such as a table or the like.
The o eration of the device is as follows:
The evice is clamped to a suitable support or table, and the bacon to be sliced is positioned on. the carriage. The meat engaging block is now moved into engagement with the meat and the prongs embedded therein.
As the crank handleis rotated, to rotate the blade 25, the carriage is moved along the base, with the result that the meat is fedlto the rotary knife which removes a slice therefrom, the linger 23 contacting with the slice to feed lthe slice through the trough 24.
I claim Y l. A slicing machine including a base, a carriage mounted for sliding movement on the base, a rotary knife operating adjacent to one edge of the carriage, a trough disposed adjacent to the knife and adapted to receivematerial cut by the knife, and a laterally extended finger operating adjacent to the trough for moving material through the trough.
2. A slicing machine including a base, a rotary knife supported by the base, a carriage moving transversely of the base and adapted to support material'under operation, a trough disposed adjacent to the knife and adapted to receive material cut by the knife, and a finger carried by the carriage andadapted to engage material in `the trough to move the material from the trough.
