Charging. - A skip for charging blast furnaces is provided with a cover at the point of coupling to the hoisting mechanisms, and means are provided for maintaining the cover in a slightly raised position when the whole weight of the skip is taken by its bottom, the cover closing, under its own weight, when the weight of the skip is taken by the furnace throat. As shown, the hoisting cables 1 act, through pulleys 2, 2<1>, on a cross-piece 3 connected to a frame 5 through the medium of springs 4 and attached, by a rocking-beam 13 and pivoted links 18, 18<1>, to arms 14, 14<1> which are pivoted to the frame 5 and carry at their outer ends cables 15 supporting the cover 12. Sleeves 20 are provided inside the springs 4 to limit their compression. Fig. 1 shows the skip being raised, the whole weight being taken by the movable bottom 11; the springs 4 are consequently compressed to their limit and the cover 12, which is guided by the rod 6, is retained in a slightly raised position. Immediately the skip is seated on the furnace throat and its weight taken thereby, the springs 4 expand and the cross-piece 3 moving downwardly causes similar movement of the outer ends of the arms 14, 14<1> to lower the cover on to the skip. Further lowering of the frame 5 causes the bell 11 to descend so that the contents of the skip are discharged, the cover 12, during discharge, remaining seated on the skip.
