BLAST-FURNACE AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1917. Serial No. 192,973.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS GARMONDS- WAY WRIGHTSON and JUsTUs'MAcNUs RING- QUIST, subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at Teesdale Iron Works, Thornaby-on-T'ees, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blast-Furnaces and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blast furnaces and the like of the type in which the furnace mouth is closed by a bell above which is a seal normally held closed by weighted levers.
The objects of the invention are to reduce the distance between the seal and the bell in order to prevent the breakage of the fuel, and also to remove as far as possible obstructions between the seal and the bell and so obtain a better distribution of the fuel.
According to this invention the bell is suspended by links from a ring which is suspended from four links passing through stuffing boxes at the top of a casing of usual construction at the top of the furnace. These links are connected together in pairs, each pair being connected to a beam. The beams may be parallel or may meet at a point and may be worked by a hydraulic ram.
The seal at the top of the casing has upon it a globular socket in which are two hemispheres, a pin passing through the socket and hemispheres. Each hemisphere is connected to an arm bifurcated at its end and pivoted to a weighted lever.
The accompanying drawings show the top of a blast furnace made in accordance with this invention. Figure 1 is a vertical section and Fig. 2 a plan. Fig. 3 shows a detail.
The walls A of the furnace carry a ring B which forms a seating for a bell C by means of which the mouth of the furnace is closed. The bell C is suspended from a ring D by three links E. Connected to the upper side of the ring D are four links F passing through stufiing boxes G in the casing H of the furnace and connected together in pairs by rods I. Each link F is connected by another link J to a chain K attached to one or other of the beams L pivoted at M and actu ated by hydraulic rams N. Above the bell G is a seal 0 at the top of the casing H. On the underside of the seal 0 is a globular socket P containing hemispheres Q, while a pin R passes through the socket P and the hemispheres Q as shown in Fig. 3. The hemispheres are connected to arms S whose bifurcated ends T are pivoted to levers U mounted on shafts V and having weights W which tend to retain the seal 0 against the casing H. Upon the shafts V are beveled wheels X in gear with other beveled wheels Y at the ends of a shaft Z, the shafts V and Z being mounted on brackets a on the top of the furnace. The casing H is provided with a seat I) for the reception of the skip containing the charge for the furnace.
The apparatus is operated as follows The skip is lowered on to the seat I) and the bottom of the. skip is lowered together with the charge which in their descent press down the seal 0, allowing the charge to be delivered from the skip on to the bell C. When the charge has been delivered the bottom of the skip is closed and the seal O is raised by means of the weighted levers U. The beams L are then moved by the hydraulic rams N thereby lowering the bell C and allowing the charge to enter the furnace.

and links connecting the inner ends of said levers With the underside of the seal.
6. In a furnace a top casing having top and bottom openings, a bell. for closing the bottom opening, a ring Within the casing, links suspending the bell from the casing, means connected With the ring for moving it and the bell downward to open the mouth of the furnace, a seal for closing the top opening 01": the casing and Which is movable downward within said ring to uncover said top opening, and pivotally mounted levers oonnectedwith the underside of the seal for supporting it.
7. In a furnace a top casing having top and bottom openings, a bell for closing the bottom opening, a ring Within the casing, links suspending the bell from the ring, means applied to the ring for moving it and the bell downward to open the mouth of the furnace, a seal for closing the top opening of the casing and which is movable downward Within said ring to, uncover said opening, and pivotally mounted levers extending above the ring and connected with theunderside of the sealfor supporting it.
8. In a furnace a top casing having top and bottom openings, a bell for closing the bottom opening, a ring WltlllIli-ll} casing,
links suspending the bell from the ring, means applied to the ring for moving it and the bell downward to open the mouth of the furnace, a seal for closingthe top opening of the casing and which is IIlGVttblB'ClOWIl- Ward Within the ring to uncover said top opening, levers 'pivotally mounted on the casing and extending across the ring to the central portion of the casing, and links connecting these levers with the underside of the seal.
