Abstract

Thioindigoid dyes are prepared by condensing 8-halogen-1 : 2-naphtho-oxythiophene with isatine-a -derivatives. In an example isatine is treated with phosphorus pentachloride in benzene and 8-chloro-2 : 2-naphtho-oxythiophene-added; the product dyes cotton in bluish-grey tints from the vat. The 8-chloro-2 : 1-naphthooxythiophene may be obtained by treating 8-chloronaphthalene-1-thioglycollic acid with chlorsulphonic acid. 8-Chloronaphthalene-1-thioglycollic acid is obtained from 8-chlor-1-naphthylamine by the usual methods.
