Abstract
By heating with acid condensing agents naphthalene-dithioglycollic acids or their derivatives are converted into naphthalene-di (oxythiophenes); by oxidation or by condensation with cyclic o-diketones or derivatives thereof, for instance, isatin, naphthisatin, diketodihydrothionaphthenes, or their #-derivatives, or acenaphthenequinone, the oxythionaphthenes yield thioindigoid dyestuffs dyeing cotton in green, violet, brown, olive &c. shades from the hydrosulphite vat; the mixed dyestuffs may also be prepared in one operation by treating a mixture of a naphthalene-dithioglycollic acid and the o-diketone with chlorsulphonic acid. Examples are given in which (1) naphthalene-2 : 6- or 1 : 5-dithioglycollic acid or 1-chloronaphthalene-3 : 8-dithioglycollic acid is treated with chlorosulphonic acid to yield the corresponding naphthalene-di(oxythiophene) and thioindigo colouring matter; (2) the naphthalene-di(oxythiophene) from naphthalene-2 : 6-dithioglycollic acid is condensed with 5-chlor- or 5-bromisatin, an isatin a -derivative, or two molecules of 2 : 3-diketodihydrothionaphthene-2-anilide; (3) the naphthalene - di(oxythiophene) from 1 - chlornaphthalene-3 : 8-dithioglycollic acid is condensed with one or two molecules of 5-chlor- or 5-bromisatin; (4) naphthalene-2 : 6-dithioglycollic acid is condensed directly with 5-chlorisatin, and 1-chloronaphthalene-3 : 8-dithioglycollic acid with 5 : 7-dibromisatin. Naphthalene-dithioglycollic acids are obtained from the corresponding disulphonic acids by conversion into chlorides with phosphorus pentachloride, reduction, and condensation with chloracetic acid. In an example naphthalene-2 : 6-disulphochloride is reduced, first with zinc dust in alcohol to a sulphinic acid, then with zinc and acid to a disulphide which is reduced with hydrosulphite to the dimercaptan and condensed in the same solution with chloracetic acid. The corresponding dithioglycollic acids from naphthalene-1 : 5-disulphonic acid and 1-chloronaphthalene-3 : 8-disulphonic acid are also described.
