Abstract

222,115. M.I.C.A. Manifattura Italiana Cinghie ed Affini. Sept. 22, 1923, [Convention date]. Splicing.-Relates to means for connecting the ends of spindle driving or like cords consisting of two or more yarns of cotton or other textile material. One end of the cord is formed with a loop 2; the other end is provided with a loop and also an extended tail portion 3 having a binding of fine thread 4, which may be of a distinguishing colour, the tail terminating in a needle or metal point 5. Apparatus to facilitate forming the connection comprises a support 6 on which are carried fixed adjacent staples or uprights 7, 8 meeting in a point at their free ends, and a hollow split pin 9 mounted on a spring controlled slide 10. In joining the ends, after the cord has been passed round the pulleys, the looped end 2 is placed on the pin 9 whilst the yarns at the other end are opened to form consecutive loops which are placed over the staples 7, 8 as shown in Fig. 2. The tail end is then passed through the loop 2 and threaded through the loops engaged by the staples 7, 8, being subsequently drawn tight whereby the slide 10 is drawn close up to the staples. The cord is then detached from the apparatus and the connection secured by further tightening and threading the needle 5 through the cord at other points, after which the excess portion of the tail is cut off. The method of using the apparatus in applying driving bands to single and double row spindles is indicated.
