Abstract
An overflow pipe preventing liquid in a vessel e.g. a bath or sink rising above a predetermined level (2) comprises an inverted U-tube extending from a point (3) in the base of the vessel up to the said level and then to a discharge point (5) below the base. The points may be arranged in the vessel waste pipe up and downstream of the plug. The top of U-tube is vented. <IMAGE>
Description
LIQUID LEVEL LIMITER
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A LIQUID LEVEL LIMITER. THIS IS A DEVICE TO
LIMIT THE SURFACE LEVEL OF LIQUIDS IN A VESSEL BY MEANS OF AN OUTLET
APERTURE PLACED BELOW THE OPTIMUM LIQUID SURFACE LEVEL.
MANY VESSELS, ea. BATHS, SINKS, BASINS AND THE LIKE, REQUIRE THE LEVEL
OF LIQUIDS IN THEM TC BE LIMITED,EITHER TO MAINTAIN A PARTICULAR LEVEL
OR TO PREVENT OVERFLOWING. THIS IS ACEIV2U BY PLACING AN OUTLET APER -TURE AT THE OPTIMUM LIQUID LEVEL, THROUGH WHICH ANY SURPLUS LIQUID IS
DISCHARGED. THIS METHOD IS OFTEN WASTEFUL, UNHYGIENIC AND RELATIVELY
EXPENSIVE TO MANUFACTURE, PROVIDE OR INSTAL.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION CONTROL IS PRDViOED BY POSITIONING
THE OUTLET BELOw THE SURFACE LEVEL OF THE LICUID, THIS IS CONNECTED BY
A CLOSED CIRCUIT TO A POSITION LEVEL WITH THE 'DESIRED OR SUITABLE
LIQUID LEVEL AND THENCE TO A WASTE, STORAGE OR RECOVERY SYSTEM.
A SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION IS NOW DESCRIBED BY WAY OF
EXAMPLE WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING IX WHICH;
FIGURE 1 SHOWS DIAGRAMMATICALLY THE PRINCIPLE OF THE INVENTION.
FIGURE 2 DETAILS A SPECIFIC INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION, ie. A COUBINED WASTE AND OVERFLOW FITTING FOR A DOMESTIC WASH BASIN. THIS IS ONLY ONE
OF MANY POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS.
REFERRING TO FIGURE 1 THE EXAMPLE COMPRISES A VESSEL I IN WHICH THE
OPTIMUM LIQUID LEVEL 2 IS PREDETERMINED. AN APERTURE 3 IS PROVIDED AT
ANY SUITABLE POINT BELOW THE SURFACE LEVEL 2 AND CONNECTED BY A CLOSED
CIRCUIT 4 TO A POINT LEVEL WITH THE SURFACE LEVEL 2, THEN TO DISCHARGE
APERTURE 5. SHOULD THE SURFACE LEVEL OF THE LIQUID IN THE VESSEL RISE
ABOVE THE OPTIMUM LEVEL, THEN THE SURPLUS LIQUID WILL FLOW THROUGH THE
CIRCUIT UNTIL THE OPTIMUM LEVEL IS RESTORED.
FIGURE 2 DETAILS A SPECIFIC INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLE, A
COMBINED WASTE AND OVERFLOW FITTING IN A WASH BASIN.
CHAMBER 7 IS OPEN TO THE MAIN BODY OF WATER THROUGH APERTURE 3 AND IS
CONNECTED TO CHAMBER 8 WHICH OPENS TO THE WASTE PIPE THROUGH APERTURE 5, BY A TUBE 4. THE TUBE RISES TO A HEIGHT LEVEL WITH SURFACE LEVEL 2.
AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF TUBE 4 A RAISED CPENING TO THE ATMOSPHERE FOR
THE PURPOSE OF VENTILATING THE CIRCUIT, IS PROVIDED.
THE SURFACE LEVEL GF WATER ENTERING THE BASIN WILL BE THE SAME IN BOTH
THE BASIN AND TUBE 4. THUS, IF THE SURFACE LEVEL OF THE WATER SHOULD
EXCEED THE OPTIMUM LEVEL THEN THE EXCESS WILL FLOW TO WASTE UNTIL THE
SURFACE LEVEL IN THE BASIN REDUCES TO THE OPTIMUM LEVEL.
IN THIS EXAMPLE A PLUG 9 IS USED TO HOLD WATER IN THE BASIN, IT IS pOF SUCH A SIZE AND SHAPE THAT WATER IS PERMITTED TO ENTER APERTURE 3.
FIGUKE 3 DETAILS THE W WASTE TRAP FITTING, WITH DIRECTION OF FLOW SHOWN BY ARROWS.
CONVENTIONAL OVERFLOW SYSTEMS:
a. ARE UNHYGENIC. THEY HARBOUR BACTERIA WHICH ARE NOT
EASILY CLEANED AWAY.
b. ARE WASTEFUL. THEY DISCHARGE WATER FROM THE SURFACE,
THE HOTTEST REGION.
THE PRESENT INVENTION OVERCOMES THESE SERIOUS DISADVANTAGES.
THE AGGREGATE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREAS CF ALL APERTURES, CONDUITS, PIPES
OR CHAMBERS ARE SUFFICIENT TO CARRY THE VOLUME OF LICUID THAT THE
SYSTEM MAY NEED TO DISCHARGE.
APERTURES 3 AND 5 MAY BE SINGULAR OR PLURAL.
Claims (1)
1. A LIQUID LEVEL LIMITER COMPRISES A MEANS FOR LIMITING THE SURFACE
LEVEL OF A LIQUID OR LIQUIDS IN A VESSEL BY MEANS OF AN OUTFLOW
APERTURE POSITIONED BELOW THE HEIGHT AT WHICH THE SURFACE OF THE
LIQUID OR LIQUIDS iS TO BE MAINTAINED OR LIMITED.
