Abstract

1360673 Coffee-brewing apparatus BUNNO-MATIC CORP 23 Aug 1971 39417/71 Heading A4E [Also in Divisions B8 F4 and G1] A water heating apparatus for use in a coffee brewer 10 comprises a hot water tank 11 provided with a heating element 14 and a siphon tube 17, a cold water inlet pipe 24 provided with a dump valve 26, a cold water basin 27 having a cold water inlet line 28 provided with a supply valve 29, means for closing the dump valve 26 and opening the supply valve 29 to cause water to flow into the basin 27, and means for opening the dump valve 26 and closing the supply valve 29 when a predetermined quantity of cold water has flowed into the basin. The predetermined quantity of cold water in the basin flows into the hot water tank and displaces an equal quantity of hot water which flows through the siphon tube 17 to a spray head 18 for application to coffee 19 on a filter 20. In use, a start switch 50, Fig. 2, is closed to complete a circuit, and a solenoid 32 closes the dump valve 26, a solenoid 33 opens the supply valve 29, and a winding 45 closes contacts 43 of a relay 44. When switch 50 is released the solenoids 32, 33 and the winding 45 are still energized through closed contacts 41, 43. Cold water supplied through inlet line 28 fills the basin until a water level sensor 40 opens contacts 41 to de-energize solenoids 32, 33. The spring-loaded supply valve 29 subsequently closes and the spring-loaded dump valve 26 opens. The quantity of cold water supplied may be varied by adjusting the vertical position of the sensor 40. The tank 11 has a vent tube 16 and the heating element 14 is controlled by a thermostat 15. The water level sensor 40 is protected by baffles 30, 42. Light rays are reflected by a prism (60), Fig.3 (not shown), from a light source (58) to a light responsive device (57) which renders a SCR (56) conducting. The SCR ceases to conduct when the water level reaches the prism and the contacts 41, Fig.2, are effectively opened. A diode (61), Fig.3 (not shown), reduces chatter of the relay contacts 43.
