Abstract
A device for reclosing a can comprises a depending boss (14) for entering the aperture of the can, a sealing member (15), a front clasp (16) for engaging the rim of the can, and concentric rear clasps (18, 20) enabling either one of two different sizes of can to be accommodated. The device is moulded from plastics material. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN CAN CLOSURES
This invention relates to an improved closure for cans. Such a closure is described in Heubl's European application No. 81105748.8 filed 21 July 1981, and 5 intended to span across a ring pull can from one top seam to the other to close the aperture in the top of the can.
A problem that has arisen in connection with the above mentioned cans is that the now current large cover (209) beverage can whose top cover is 2 i/2 inches (64mm) across is being replaced at least in part by a 206 can whose top cover is only 58mm across and the existing can closures will not work with the new size. The can closure has front and back clasps, and a universal closure has been made in which the back clasp (i.e. the one furthest from the can opening) is a separate piece slideably guided in the body of the clasp and biased by a spring towards the front clasp. Such a closure is inevitably more expensive to make.
We have realised that the problem can be solved for the 206 and 209 sizes of cans by providing a pair of concentric closely spaced back clasps one inside the other depending from and each moulded as one piece with the body of the clasp, and that the back clasps can be dimensioned and positioned so that the upstanding rim and rolled edge seal of a larger size (209) can passes between the back clasps and snaps into the outer clasp whilst the upstanding rim and rolled edge seal of the smaller size (206) can snaps within the inner clasp.
An embodiment of the invention is diagrammatically illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is an underneath view of a removable snap-fit closure for size 206 and 209 cans.
In the drawing, a can closure 10 comprises a body 12 of moulded plastics having a depending boss 14 for location into the aperture of an intended ring pull or similar can. A moulded-in rubber gasket 15 surrounds the boss 14. The body 12 also has a depending front clasp 16 and a pair or rear clasps 18, 20 which are concentric but which are spaced apart as shown. The rim of a 206 can fits within and is snap engaged by the clasp 20 and the rim of a 209 can fits between clasps 20 and 18 and is snap engaged by the clasp 18.
Claims (5)
1. A closure for a can having a peripheral top seam, and an opening in the top, the closure comprising a body dimensioned to span the top of any one of at least two sizes of can having different top diameters and formed with a member positioned to close the opening, a depending front clasp for engaging the rim of a can and concentric depending rear clasps ailocated resectively to the said sizes of can to enable one of the rear clasps to engage the can rim substantially diametrically opposite the front clasp.
2. A closure according to Claim 1, in which the said member is a boss for location into the aperture of an intended ring pull.
3. A closure according to Claim 2 moulded from plastics material with a moulded-in rubber gasket surrounding the boss.
4. A closure according to any one of the preceding claims having two rear clasps allocated respectively to 206 and 209 cans.
5. A closure substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
