Oil switches are arranged with a relatively unimpeded path of escape for the gases generated when an arc is drawn, which is independent of the depth of liquid over the contacts. When the movable contact rod 6, Fig. 1, is withdrawn from the fixed contacts 7 the arc gases pass into insulating tubes 8 the open ends of which are adjacent to the contacts. The tubes 8 have metal end portions 9 outside the switch tank 1 which are connected by pipes 17 to a gas reservoir 18 the pressure in which is sufficient to force down the liquid level in the tubes 8 so that a comparatively unimpeded path of escape for the arc gases is formed. The end pieces 9 are fitted with adjustably spring-loaded relief valves 11, Fig. 2, normally closed, but opened by rise of pressure in the tubes 8 to permit excess of gas to escape into the atmosphere through apertures 10.
