Abstract

An umbrella support arm attachment has a clamp (16) which clamps to the framework of a perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair, an extending arm (6/7) ending in an elbow joint (2/3) with a further clamp (1) which is used to attach an umbrella. This enables the operator of the perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair to have the protection of the umbrella whilst keeping both hands free for operating the vehicle. After use, the umbrella support arm attachment collapses and folds down alongside the frame of the vehicle. <IMAGE>

Description

UMBRELLA SUPPORT ARM ATTACHMENT This invention relates to an umbrella support arm attachment to support an umbrella over a perambulator, pushchair, wheelchair or similar.
When pushing a perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair the person propelling the vehicle ideally needs to use two hands to exercise sufficient control over it. In the event of it raining, this function is impaired when an umbrella has to be carried.
According to the present invention there is provided an umbrella support arm attachment comprising a clamp which attaches to the framework of a perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair, an extending telescopic arm with locking clamp, an adjustable elbow joint with locking catch and a clamp for attachment to the shaft of an umbrella.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the front elevation; and Figure 2 shows the side elevation.
Referring to the drawings the umbrella support arm attachment comprises a clamp (16) which attaches to the framework of a perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair and is secured by clamping screws (15). A telescopic arm (6/7) is attached to this clamp by a star grip (9). The arm comprises two sections one of which slides into the other (6 into 7). This is locked into position by a further star grip (8). At the other end of the arm is an elbow joint (2/3) with a locking pin (4). The elbow joint can move through 180 degrees. At the end of the elbow joint is a further clamp (1) which attaches to the shaft of an umbrella and is secured by a star grip (9).
In order to use the umbrella support arm attachment the clamp (16) is secured to the frame of the perambulator, pushchair or wheelchair by tightening the clamping screws (15). The star grip (9) is released to allow the arm (6/7) to be swung into the required position Sapd then tightened. The star grip (8) is released to enabls the arm to be extended to the required height and then re-tightened. The elbow joint (2/3) is released using the pivot release knob (11) and turned to the required position. The star grip (9) is released to allow the clamp (1) to be positioned on the umbrella shaft and the star grip re-tightened.
In order to collapse the umbrella support arm attachment after use the procedure is carried out in reverse order. However, it is not necessary to remove the umbrella support arm attachment from the vehicle as it is designed to lay alongside the framework without obstructing or interfering with the use of the vehicle. If using a collapsible umbrella, it is not necessary to remove this either.Where the umbrella support arm attachment is being used on a collapsible style pushchair, this type of vehicle can be collapsed with the umbrella support arm attachment and umbrella in place in their collapsed form.
