Abstract
A combined grill and oven (10) has a cavity (12) with an internal grill element (20) pivoted towards a mouth of the cavity (12) adjacent one corner of the roof (22). It can be pivoted outwards to give access to the roof (22) for cleaning. The oven (10) may be heated by conventional electric elements and/or by microwaves. A position sensor (23) may be provided responsive to the position of the grill element (20) to enable the element (20) only when it is in its working position. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OVENS
This invention relates to an oven.
In one aspect the invention provides a microwave oven having a radiant electrical heating element located adjacent its roof.
A problem with such an oven structure is that the roof cannot be made loose and removable for cleaning.
Accordingly the invention further provides a combined grill and oven comprising an oven cavity and a grill element adjacent the roof of the oven cavity, wherein the grill element is pivoted towards the mouth of the oven cavity adjacent one corner of the roof for movement between a working position where it underlies the roof and a cleaning position where it is rotated out of the cavity to give access to the roof.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows an oven with its door open to reveal the oven cavity and with a grill element in its working position;
Figure 2 shows an oven cavity like Figure 1 but with the grill element pivoted to its cleaning position.
In the drawings, an oven 10 has a cavity 12 and a door 14 pivoted to the mouth of the cavity 12. Microwaves from a source 16 are discharged at 18 into the cavity 12 to cook food therein, the source 16 being connected to the door 14 so that it operates in response to a control 17 only when the door 14 is closed. A serpentine radiant grill element 20 is suspended at a close spacing under roof 22 of the cavity 12 by means of a pivot 24 located adjacent one front corner of the roof 22 and in the working position (Fig. 1) underlies the roof 22.
It is operable through control 19 and power supply 21 to supply power to the element 20 for grilling food within the cavity 12. The element 20 can be hinged outwardly to the position of Figure 2 where it is clear of the roof 22 to give cleaning access thereto, and rotated about a vertical axis to the exterior of the oven cavity.
A sensor 23 such as a microswitch is operated by the element 20 when that element is in its working position to enable the power supply 21: movement of the element 20 from the working position thus interrupts the power supply 21. To provide a warning against touching the element 22 whilst it is hot, an internal thermostat (not shown) supplies an input to comparator 26 whose threshold is set by voltage divider resistances 27, 28, the output state of the comparator 26 being processed by amplifier 30 or other suitable means and used to illuminate a warning light 29 when the temperature is above a given threshold.
Various modifications may be made to the embodiment described above without departing from the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims. For example, the oven could be operated by concealed heating elements in its floor, side walls or back wall either as a conventional oven or as a fan assisted oven and such concealed heating elements could be provided alone or along with the microwave source 16.
Claims (9)
1. A combined grill and oven comprising an oven cavity and a grill element adjacent the roof of the oven cavity, wherein the grill element is pivoted towards the mouth of the oven cavity adjacent one corner of the roof for movement between a working position where it underlies the roof and a cleaning position where it is rotated out of the cavity to give access to the roof.
2. An oven according to Claim 1, wherein the sides or rear of the oven are provided with concealed electrical heating elements for roasting food placed within the cavity.
3. An oven according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the oven is operatively connected to a source of microwaves for cooking food placed within the cavity.
4. An oven according to any preceding claim, wherein the oven roof has clip or latch means operable to retain the grill element in its working position.
5. An oven according to any preceding claim, wherein the oven roof has switch means that changes state -in response to the presence of the grill element at its working position and a power supply for supplying current to the grill element only in response to the state of the switch means corresponding to the grill element being in its working position.
6. An oven according to any preceding claim, further comprising thermostat means for indicating the temperature of the grill element and warning light means operated in response to the state of the thermostat means for indicating when the element is hot.
7. A combined grill and oven substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
8. A microwave oven having a radiant electrical grill element located adjacent to its roof.
9. A microwave oven according to Claim 8, wherein the grill element is pivoted to the roof for rotation about a vertical axis between a working position where it underlies the roof and a cleaning position where it has rotated out of the cavity to give access to the roof.
