Abstract
220,033. Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Co., Ltd., (Automatic Electric Co.). May 1, 1923. Relays. -In a two-step electromagnetic relay provided with two coils wound on separate cores an armature is adapted to move about one fulcrum upon the energization of one coil and about another fulcrum upon the additional or separate energization of the other coil. The cores 61, 65, Fig. 2, of the coils 15, 16 respectively are secured by a screw 56 to an iron heel-piece 40 of which the upper end is bent at right angles as shown. The armature 42 is bent slightly as shown in Fig. 2, and carries at the bend arms 41, 50, Figs. 2 and 3 for actuating the contact springs, and is secured by screws 47, 53 to one end of a spring strip 46 secured at its other end by screws 45, 52 to the heel-piece 40. This strip is preferably of non-magnetic material to prevent sticking of the armature, and normally holds the armature against an adjustable back stop 43. When the coil 15 is energized the armature is attracted against the core 61 and the arms 41, 50 are moved sufficiently to cause the spring 19 to leave its resting contact without engaging its working contact and to cause the spring 18 to engage its working contact, the springs 17, 21 being unaffected by this movement. Upon the additional or separate energization of the coil 16 the armature 42 is further attracted and turns about a fulcrum located at the bend and the further movement of the arms 41, 50 causes the springs 17, 20 to leave their resting-contacts and the spring 19 to engage its working contact. In a modification a straight instead of a bent armature is used and the upper end of the heel-piece 40 is replaced by a vertically-adjustable bracket so inclined that the armature is normally closer to the core 61 than to the (core 65.
