Abstract

219,856. Steinacher, R. Nov. 15, 1923. Sparking - plugs; external spark gaps.-An adjustable external spark gap is formed between the outer end of the central electrode and a rod 31 mounted in an insulator 29 which is supported by a sleeve 27 encircled by a cylindrical extension 23 on the gland nut 20. The spark gap may be inspected by bringing into register holes in the sleeves 23, 27, the relative movements of the sleeves being restricted by a bayonet joint consisting of a slot 50, 55 in the sleeve 23 and a struck-out tongue 52 in the sleeve 27. In addition to the fine adjustment for regulating the size of the spark gap, the outer portion of the electrode may be lifted or removed quickly out of sparking range for the purpose of testing the ignition by making use of the bayonet joint. A longitudinally moving sleeve may close the above-mentioned apertures, instead of this being effected by the relative rotation of the. parts.
