Abstract

In a method of cutting a surface (11) of a workpiece (10) comprising contacting the surface (11) with a cutting tool (1, 2) while producing relative movement between the workpiece (10) and the tool (1, 2), the tool (1, 2) has at least two cutting points (3, 4) which contact the surface (11) of the workpiece (10) and provide successive cuts to mutually different depths during one passage of the tool (1, 2) over the surface (11). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of cutting a surface of a workpiece This invention relates to a method of cutting a surface of a work-piece, and to a cutting tool for use in such method.
In the manufacture of contact lenses a surface of a plastics material blank which constitutes a work-piece, is cut by means of a cutting tool, generally having a diamond cutting head, by contacting the surface with the tool while producing relative movement between the blank and the tool.
Known cutting tools for use in such a method of manufacture have a single cutting point which contacts the surface to be cut, and thus it is necessary to make a plurality of successive passes of the tool over the surface in order to obtain a required shape and finish, a first cut being, for example, a bulk cut in which a reletively large amount of material is cut from the surface, with a subsequent cut being a fine cut which produces a required finish on the surface.
According to this invention there is provided a method of cutting a surface of a work-piece comprising contacting the surface with a cutting tool while producing relative movement between the work-piece and the cutting tool, in which the cutting tool has at least two cutting points which contact the surface of the work-piece and provide successive cuts to mutually different depths in the surface during one passage of the cutting tool over the surface.
The method of this invention has the advantage that fewer passes of the cutting tool over the surface of the work-piece are required to obtain a required product.
Further, the use of more than one cutting point on the tool increases the life of the tool as compared with a single point tool with which the same cutting point must be used for all the necessary successive cuts.
This invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a diagramnatic illustration of the working head of a diamond cutting tool for use in carrying out the method of the invention; and Figure 2 illustrates the use of the tool of Figure 1.
The tool shown in Figure 1 comprises an arm 1 of, for example, metal, carrying a working head 2 made of a diamond. The diamond head 2 is shaped to provide two cutting points 3 and 4 located as shown, at mutually different distances from the remote end (not shown) of the arm 1.
As shown in Figure 2, when the tool of Figure 1 is pivoted in the direction of arrow A about a point X relative to a surface 11 of a work-piece 10, the leading cutting point 3 gives a bulk cut and cuts the surface a relatively large depth D while the following cutting point 4 gives a fine cut and cuts the new surface a further relatively small depth d.
By rotating the work-piece 10 about an axis Y perpendicular to the pivot axis X of the tool the tool is caused to cut a concave surface on the work-piece.
Otherwise the relative movement between the tool and the work-piece can be such as to produce a convex surface on the work-piece, in known manner.
1. A method of cutting a surface of a workpiece comprising contacting the surface with a cutting tool while producing relative movement between the work-piece and the cutting tool, in which the cutting tool has at least two cutting points which contact the surface of the work-piece and provide successive cuts to mutually different depths in the surface during one passage of the cutting tool over the surface.
2. A method as claimed in Claim 1, in which the cutting tool has two cutting points, the cutting point leading in the direction of movement of the cutting tool over the surface performing a bulk cut on the surface while the other cutting point subsequently performs a fine cut on the surface.
3. A method as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, in which the cutting tool pivots about an axis relative to the work-piece while the workpiece rotates about an axis perpendicular to the pivot axis of the cutting tool.
4. A method of manufacturing a contact lens, as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the work-piece is a contact lens blank and the cutting tool is a diamond.
5. A method of cutting a surface of a workpiece, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings.
6. A cutting tool for use in a method as claimed in any preceding claim, comprising a work head mounted on one end of an arm, the head providing two or more cutting points arranged at mutually different distances from the remote end of the arm.
7. A cutting tool substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawing.
