Abstract

Adjusting for position.-In an adjusting-device for the rolls of grinding, pulverizing, and the like and other machinery in which the working pressure is applied to the rolls by springs and having independent means for imparting a desired contacting or non-contacting setting of the rolls, the setting is obtained by a fine screw adjustment controlled by calibrated hand-wheels. Fig. 2 shows the adjustment gear as applied to a triple roller-mill. Each end of each of the boxes a of the medial roll b is fitted with a fixed nut c into which screws a hollow screw d with spur teeth e on its head. A screw f screws into the screw d and is locked by means of a nut g. Side spindles h mounted in bearings in the head i of the frame j have teeth k at one end to engage the teeth e and at the other ends are provided with calibrated hand-wheels l and indicators m. The movable boxes n of the outside rolls are each situated between the free end of the screw f and the usual compression springs p tensioned by screw adjustments q. The springs p having been tensioned to the desired degree and the screw d screwed tightly against the end of the box a, the screw f is adjusted until the adjacent rollers are correctly positioned, after which the nut g is tightened. Any further adjustment of the outside rollers while in action is effected by means of the hand-wheels l. Instead of two spindles h, a single long spindle may pass through two link bearings mounted on the ends of the box a and have teeth to engage the teeth e on one side of the box, a sleeve on a shouldered down portion of the spindle having teeth on its inner end to engage the teeth e on the other side of the box. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, applied to a twin or triple roller mill, the outer end of one of the boxes, or each of the outer boxes, is pressed by a spring r which is tensioned by a screw s working in a fixed nut t provided with projections that pass through slots in a sleeve screw w and are anchored in recesses in the main side frame of the machine. A plate y bolted to the end face of the bearing grips the flange x at the inner end of the sleeve w. The sleeve w has a fine external screw-thread at its outer end and is operated by a calibrated wheel nut 2 which may be locked by a wheel 3. A separator spring 4, which may be provided with a screw adjustment 7, is interposed between adjacent boxes 5, 6. The spring r may be replaced by a solid steel pad if a dead-set machine is desired. In another arrangement, Fig. 10, the adjusting nut 18 on the outer end of the tension tube 13 bears against the frame head 17 and a flange 14 on the inner end of the tube 13 engages a spring 15 bearing against the inside face 16 of the head 17. The adjusting spindle 19 is screwed at 20 to engage the screwthread 21 in the tube 13. The hand-wheel 22 on the end of the spindle 19 is fitted with a calibrated ring 23, and a sliding pointer 26 carried by the top boss 25 of a bracket 24 on the tube 13 indicates the setting.
