Abstract

A pop-up waste assembly in which the mushroom valve (30) has its stem (32) actuated by a crank (38) which is displaced by a Bowden cable to open the valve, and is gravity closed. The cable is attached to a second crank (44) on a shaft which also supports the crank (38). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pop-up Waste This invention relates to pop-up waste assemblies particularly for use with sinks, baths and the like.
According to the invention a pop-up waste comprises a flow tube having a flanged upper end for connection to the outlet of a sink or like, a mushroom valve for closing the tube, a crank fast with a shaft journalled in the waste on an axis generally transverse to and offset from the stem of the valve, the crank being arranged to displace the stem axially to open the valve, and a second crank fast with the shaft externally of the tube for displacement by an actuating cable.
One embodiment of the invention will now be more particularly described so that the invention will be better understood and further aspects of the invention will be appreciated.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the waste fitting with a coverplate removed for clarity; Figure 2 is a sectional plan of the same taken generally on the line 2-2 of Figure 3; Figure 3 is a sectional elevation; Figure 4 is an elevation of a combined bath overflow and waste control fitting, again with a coverplate removed for clarity; Figure 5 is an exploded sectional side elevation of the assembly of Figure 4; and Figure 6 is a sectional elevation similar to Figure 5 showing a modification.
Referring first to Figure 1, the bath, sink or like waste comprises a conventional tubular body lOin this case adapted for connection to an overflow pipe as well as to the main waste outlet of the appliance by means of a laterally extending branch 12. The upper end of the part 10 has a flange 14 which is connected to the appliance in conventional manner.
For example the flange 14 may be adapted to house an O-ring in the groove 16 (Figure 3) to surround the waste aperture in the appliance on the underside, with a loose flange 18 sandwiching the appliance around the outlet aperture and connected to the waste tube 10 by means of a central screw 20 engaging a nutfitted in a collar 24formed unitarily with the tube 10 by means of radially extending spokes (not shown).
The waste plug 30 is integral with the stem 32 which is of non-circular section, for example being of cruciform section and axially slidable in the bore of the screw 20 which is of circular cross section.
Hence any risk of the stem sticking in the bore of the screw, so that the pop-up valve remains open instead of closing under gravity, is minimised or avoided. The lower end of the stem 32 carries an adjustment screw 34 with a lock nut 36 so that the clearance (if any) between the part 34 and an operating crank 38 can be adjusted. Crank 38 is fast with a shaft 40 best seen in Figure 2: conveniently the crank, which may be moulded from a suitable synthetic resin, has an elliptical bore and the shaft has a complementary cross section so as to be a push-fit into that bore to make the two fast. The shaft40 is journalled on an axis contained in a plane parallel to a plane containing the axis of the mushroom valve stem 32, the two axes being at right angles to one another.Shaft 40 is sealed in a cavity in the waste part by O-rings 42 and carries a second crank 44 (in this case integral with the shaft) adapted for connection to one end 46 of a Bowden cable 48, of which the outer cable terminal fitting 50 is supported in a wall 52 provided on the waste fitting. To this end, the cable ferrule 50 has a groove 51 and the parts 54 10 have complementary aligned grooves 55, 11, and circlip 56 engages the groove 51 on the ferrule at its inner periphery and is received in the grooves 55, 11 in the parts 10 54 at its outer periphery, so as to fix the ferrule in position axially.
The circlip further comprises a lug 57 which projects into a slot 58 in the plate 54, and the latter also has posts 59 which are received in complementary apertures 60 in the chamber wall to align the cover plate with the chamber before it is fixed in position by a screw. Coverplate 54 normally closes the chamber containing the outer end of the shaft, the crank 44 and the cable parts 4650. It will be appreciated that the waste valve is opened by clockwise rotation of the shaft as seen in Figure 3, when tension is applied to the Bowden inner cable.
When the tension is released the valve may close under gravity or may be pushed shut.
Turning now to Figures 4 and 5, the arrangement shown therein is a bath overflow and control assembly for the waste valve. The overflow assembly comprises a part 61 having a flange 62 to surround the overflow aperture in the bath (or like) and fit behind the wall of the same, and a loose flange 64 which is clamped against flange 62 to fix the parts to the bath or like. The clamping is effected by a nut 66 screw-engaged with the centre portion 68 of the fitting 61. The annular space 70 which is accessible from the bath via slots 72 in the loose flange 64 connects via stub pipe 74 and an appropriate flexible pipe, with the branch 12 Figure 1.
The centre portion 68 houses shaft 76 which at end 78 is fast with and possibly integral with a radially extending crank 80 (Figure 4). The part 76 may be snap engaged in position and sealed against the flow of water through the bore by means of the O-ring 82. The shaft 76 may have a non-circular bore 84 opening at one end for engagement with a complementary section stem 86 on an operating knob 88 which is a push-fit therein. Knob 88 enables the shaft 76 to be turned and the crank 80 to be displaced. the crank 80 is connected to the Bowden cable in a similar way to that illustrated and described with reference to Figures 1 to 3, the cable entering through aperture 90 with an appropriate clip to engage the outer cable end fitting, and again the chamber formed in the body part (61) housing the crank is closed by a coverplate 92 fixed in this case by a screw 94.
Figure 6 shows a modified version in which the control assembly is made without a bath overflow, and in this case what was the centre part 68 passes directly through an aperture in the appliance or sink top for example and in this case a front flange 96 may be screwed home on one end of the part 68 and a loose nut 98 tightened against it, with the appliance wall clamped therebetween to fix the parts in position. The operational arrangements in terms of turning knob 88 to turn shaft 76 and angularly displace a crank to operate the cable are the same as in Figure 5, although the construction can in some ways be simplified since it is unnecessaryto provide O-ring seals in this arrangement.
