Abstract
A glazing head of channel section has one limb (14) of greater depth than the other (16). The base (12) of the channel is inclined to the limbs at an angle other than a right angle so that a corner joint (66) can be made with one end of one bead chamfered to engage the outer surface (11) of the base of the other bead, without the need for precise dimensioning of the bead. Thermal expansion or contraction is also accommodated. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Window glazing
This invention relates to windowglazing, more particularlyto a glazing bead for use in conjunction with awindowframe of metal.
It is conventional practice with metal framed windows to securethe glass (sometimes as sealed double units) with the aid of putty which is sometimes reinforced in its retaining effect by embedded metal restraining devices or clips. In our Britsh Patent 2 102 483 the conventional use of putty and embedded restraining clips is avoided by the provision of a plurality of mushroom-headed screws and glazing beading which can be snapped over the head ofthe screw to ensure retention
The glazing bead of our prior patent has proved successful but because of the particular form of the beading extrusion selected, thejoints at the corners of a windowframe have to be made with high precision.
According to the present invention there is provided glazing beading of generally channel sectionwith the limbs thereof of unequal extent and the base of the channel inclined to both limbs, for example at an angle of 600C.
Glazing beading em bodying the inventionwill now be described with reference tothe accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of one embodiment of beading in accordancewiththe invention,to a greatly enlarged scale;
Figure 2 is a section of an opening light window frame incorporating a glazing bead in accordance with the invention;
Figure 3 is a plan view showing a corner joint formed by glazing beading as illustrated in Figure 1; and Figures 4 to 1 1 are illustrations of the use of glazing beading in accordance with the present invention in conjuction with window fra me members of various profiles.
When glazing beading in accordance with our prior
Patent 2102 483 encounters a corner of a window frame there is now choice but to form a conventional butt joint. In order that the joint shall be wholly satisfactory thetolerances over a length, which is sometimes quitesubstantial, must be verytight but nevertheless, expansion problems mean that a genuine butt joint is sometimes difficult to achieve owing to cumulative manufacturing tolerances in the beading and the associated frame and furthermore all temperatureconditionsencountered by a window frame can also adversely affect the quality ofthe joint.
Referring now to Figure 1, glazing beading 10 in accordance with the present invention has a profile of irregular channel form including a base 12 and two limbs 14,16 of unequal depth. As illustrated in the preferred embodiment of Figure 1, the base 12 is inclined at an angle of 300 to the imaginary line which would apply if the channel section were of regular, right-angled form. Other angles can of course be selected if desired.
The left-hand limb 14, as shown, has for a portion 15 thereof joined to the base 12 the same thickness as the latterandthis portion terminates ata ridge 18 directed towards the opposite limb, one face 20 of the projection being inclined at 30 to a normal, imaginary, line 21 to the base of the limb and this inclined face terminates atthe commencement of a further portion 22 of the limb of lesserthicknessthan the first portion 15 referred to above. The left-hand limb 14 terminates at a further ridge or other projection 24 having one face 26 lying in a plane normal to the plane of the limb itself, finally terminating in a rounded end part28, a chamfer 30 and a short face 32 which lies parallel to the outerface 34 of the limb.
In contrast, the right-hand limb 16, as shown, is approximatelytwo-thirdsthedepth of the left-hand limb 14 but is plane on both inner and outerfaces35 and 37 and maintains the same thickness as the base l2throughoutapartfrom a rounded lower edge part 36, as shown.
Turning nowto Figure 2, the manner in which beading 10 i n accordance with the present invention can be used in a conventional opening light window frame 40 is illustrated and it will be seen thatthe inclinedouterface 11 of the base 12 of the inverted (as
shown) channel effectively forms a continuation of the free face of the putty or otherglazing compound42 which acts to retain a single pane or double glazing
unit 44.The latter is accurately located by setting blocks 46,48,50 and the longer limb 14 of the glazing
bead 10 engages between the blocks 46 which lie on the outerface of the glass or double-glazing-unit44 and mushroom-headed screws 52 (only one shown),
several of which are provided along the length of the frame. Each screw is surrounded by a sleeve which
acts as a spacer to ensure that it is screwed into the
correct depth.
It wi 11 be apparentthatthe inclined outerface ofthe base gives a glazier an automatic guide to achieve a
suitable, rain-deflecting inclination to the putty sur
face.
Infigure S another and important advantage of the
glazing bead in accordance with the present invention
will become apparent, namelytheomissionofany
necessity to form a conventiohal butt joint withthe corresponding need for beading lengthsofhigh accuracy coupled with similarly accurately made
window frame members. At a corner, as illustrated,
one glazing bead length 60 extends substantially into
the corner of theframe 40 itself but will be spaced
slightly at 62 from one face of the frame if the corner of
the frame is radiused, as illustrated. This mom ber will be cut at an angle of 300 to its length direction as with
the glazing bead length 64 which meets the length 60
so that the 30 chamber engages the outer surface 11
ofthe base of the first-mentioned length 60 of glazing
bead.
The drawings originally filed were informal and the print here reproduced
is taken from a later filed formal copy.
The claims were filed later than the filing date within the period prescribed
by Rule 25(1) of the Patents Rules 1982.
The absence of any needfor precise dimensioning
ofthe beading and windowframe reduces costs at the
manufacturing stage and the absence of a butting joint meansthatthermal expansions and constractions can be accommodated without any problems.
The remaining Figures illustratevariouswindow frame sections and the manner in which the glazing
bead in accordance with the invention can be used.
The corresponding mushroom-headed screws have not been illustrated in each ofthe examples shown but will, in practice, be present. For every window frame section illustrated the same cornerjoint can be used.
Although in the described embodiment the limbs of the channel are unequal, it is also possible that for some uses theywill have equal depths.
Claims (10)
