Each frame length has an inwardly facing channel, and the channels 24 of the side lengths 20, 21 are capable of receiving the adjacent ends of the other pair of lengths 22, 23 or vice versa whilst the channels of all four lengths are capable of receiving an identical glazing gasket 25 as a push fit therein. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Double glazing arrangement This invention relates to a double glazing arrangement preferably having at least one horizontally sliding pane. It is also desirable that the arrangement is designed so that it can be supplied in kit form and readily assembled and fitted on site.
According to one aspect of the invention a double glazing arrangement comprises an outer frame adapted to be fixed to a window surround, at least one pane capable of being mounted for horizontal sliding movement within the outer frame, the pane having an individual frame formed of four extruded lengths having square cut ends, each length having an inwardly facing channel, and the channels of the side lengths being capable of receiving the adjacent ends of the other pair of lengths or vice versa whilst the channels of all four lengths are capable of receiving an identical glazing gasket as a push fit therein.
Preferably the channels of the top and bottom lengths have a constant internal width, and the channels of the side lengths are of T cross-section providing an inner portion having an internal width equal to the internal width of the channels of the top and bottom lengths and an outer enlarged portion having an internal width which is at least equal to the external width of the channels of the top and bottom lengths. In this case it is also preferred that each glazing gasket is of T cross-section having corresponding dimensions to the T section channels of the side lengths of the frame for the pane.
According to another aspect of the invention a frame for a sliding pane of a double glazing arrangement comprises four extruded lengths of aluminium alloy each length having an inwardly facing channel receiving a glazing gasket as a push fit therein, and each glazing gasket being an extruded length of non-flexible plastics material.
According to a further aspect of the invention, a frame for a pane of a double glazing arrangement mounted for horizontal sliding movement comprises four extruded lengths each having an inwardly facing channel for reception of the adjacent edge of the pane and also an outwardly facing slot of T crosssection, and cornerpieces for holding together the adjacent ends of the frame lengths, each cornerpiece having an arm which is a push fit within the end of the outwardly facing slot of the respective frame length and each bottom cornerpiece having a downwardly extending projection providing a relatively small surface area on which the pane slides.
Preferably the inwardly facing channel of each frame length receives a glazing gasket as a push fit therein.
By way of example, a specific embodiment in accordance with this invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a double glazing arrangement for a window; Figure 2 is a vertical section through the double glazing arrangement of Figure 1 along the line 2-2; Figure 3 is an exploded view of one corner of one of the sliding panes of the double glazing arrangement of Figure 1; and Figure 4 shows the corner illustrated in Figure 3, in its assembled state.
Referring to the drawings, a double glazing arrangement for a window has two panes 10 each being capable of horizontal sliding movement within a fixed outer frame 11. The frame 11 is formed of four separate extruded lengths 12 to 15 of aluminium alloy. The top and bottom lengths 12,13 have two channels 16 each defining a slideway for a respective pane 10, the channels of the top length 12 being deeper than those of the bottom length 13 to provide for removal of each pane 10. The side lengths 14, 15 have the same cross-section which includes an inwardly facing channel having side grooves for the retention of sealing brushes 16.Each of the lengths 12 to 15 has an outwardly extending longitudinal flange 17 having holes at spaced intervals through which the respective length is face fixed by screws 18 to the window surround, which in this embodiment is a wooden frame 19.
Each sliding pane 10 has an individual frame which is again formed of four separate extruded lengths 20 to 23 of aluminium alloy, the side lengths 20, 21 having the same cross-section and the top and bottom lengths 22, 23 having a different crosssection from the side lengths but the same as each other. Each length 20 to 23 has an inwardly facing channel 24 for reception of a glazing gasket 25 formed of non-flexible extruded plastics material, eg unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, which embraces the adjacent edge of the glass and can provide a secure push fit in the respective channel 24. If desired the internal surfaces of the walls of the channels 24 can be longitudinally grooved. Each length 20 to 23 also has a longitudinal T-shaped slot 26 for reception of one arm 28 of a respective cornerpiece 27 (Figure 3) at each end of the slot. These cornerpieces 27 each have two arms 28 at right angles and a connecting boss 29, the arms being a push fit into the ends of the slots 26 of two adjacent lengths 20 to 23 and then held therein by selftapping screws 34. The lengths are thereby assembled together (see Figure 4) to form a frame. Extending downwardly from the boss 29 of each bottom cornerpiece 27 is a projection 30, formed in this embodiment by a short length of rod press fitted into a recess in the boss. These projections 30 provide relatively small surface areas on which each pane slides along its particular channel 16 in the bottom length 13 of the outer frame 11. One external side surface ofthe side lengths 20, 21 and both external side surfaces of the top and bottom lengths 22,23 have longitudinal grooves for retention of sealing brushes 31 where required.
Whilst all the glazing gaskets 25 are of identical T cross-section, the inwardly facing channels 24 of the side lengths 20,21 of the frame for each pane 10 are different from those of the top and bottom lengths The drawing(s) originally filed wasiwere informal and the print here reproduced is taken from a later filed formal copy.
22, 23. In the case of the top and bottom lengths 22, 23 the shank of each glazing gasket 25 is received within the respective channel 24 whilst the larger head of the gasket remains exposed (Figure 2). However, the channel 24 of each side length 20, 21 is also of T cross-section so that the whole of the respective glazing gasket 25 is received therein (Figure 1). The fact that the shoulders of the T sectioned channel 24 in each side length 20,21 are defined by ribs 33 allows the lengths to be formed of the minimum amount of material. The width of the shoulders is also equal to the thickness of the walls of the channel in the top and bottom lengths 22,23.This means that the channel 24 in each side length 20, 21 has an enlarged portion which can receive the adjacent ends ofthetop and bottom lengths 22,23 during the assembly of the frame around each pane 10 so that a degree of tolerance can be permitted if one of the top and bottom lengths 22,23 is cut slightly longer than the other. Also it is less important that the cut ends of the top and bottom ends are precisely square because they will not be visible. This is an advantage since it is intended that the double-glazing arrangement should be supplied in kit form for assembly and fitting on site, e.g. on a do-it-yourself basis. To this end it is also an advantage that the arrangement does not require mitres or other angle cuts.
Handles 32 are provided for sliding the panes 10.
Each handle interengages with one of the side lengths 14, 15 of the outer frame, both to hold the respective pane closed and to give support to the respective side length to minimise bowing.
The fact that the outer frame lengths 12 to 15 are face fixed to the window surround renders the double glazing arrangement suitable for flat or bay windows. Moreover, each length 12 to 15 of the outer frame 11 is designed so that it can be reversed and mounted on a batten.
