Abstract

218,283. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Schenck, S. B., and McCloskey, F. W.). June 30, 1923, [Convention date]. Electric braking.-Two vehicles are connected by an electric coupling normally adapted to supply current from the leading vehicle to a series-wound motor on the trailer, but adapted to short-circuit this motor when the vehicles separate and thus retard the trailer should it attempt to run backwards. The coupling comprises a jumper receptacle 12 secured to the leading vehicle and a jumper head 13 attached to the trailer by a cable 11. When the vehicles separate the head 13 is pulled out of the receptacle 12 and contacts 31, 32, which are of spring material and are car. ried by the head, engage each other thereby completing the braking-circuit shown in Fig. 4. A dummy neceptacle is provided on the trailer to receive the head when it is desired to perform shunting operations.
