Abstract

218,184. Matthews, V. M. Nov. 19, 1923. Endless-track vehicles.-A portable track wheel unit comprises wheels 1 carried on axles 2 and a wheel or wheels 3 carried on axles 4. The wheels 1, 3 are overlapped or staggered and held apart by bars 6 which may oe rigid or consist wholly or in part of springs. Shoes 7 connected by pins 8 constitute a flexible tread surrounding the wheel or a continuous flexible tread may be fitted. The unit may be mounted so as to oscillate, the axle 4 being carried through to support the load centrally or the load may be distributed on the axles 2. When power is to be applied to the wheel unit the shoes are recessed to enable pins to be fitted to the wheel peripheries to give a positive drive between wheels and track.
