217,988. Stewart, R., and Laporte, Ltd., B. March 26, 1923. Barium peroxide.-Barium peroxide is produced by blowing air or oxygen or both through molten barium hydroxide. The hydroxide is maintained molten in a pot 1 set in a furnace 1<a> and air is blown through the molten material by a perforated pipe 2. Compressed air is blown through a pipe 6 which terminates under the open end of a central vertical pipe 5, up which the hydroxide is carried so as to overflow beneath a deflector 7 on to a strainer 3 which retains the peroxide and allows the excess of hydroxide to return to the pot. Alternatively, the hydroxide may be contained in a shallow tray 11, Fig. 2, in a muffle 10 heated bv flues 9 in which gas from a nozzle 8 is burnt. At one end the muffle is extended to form a tower 12 which is also heated by the flue. Air is supplied through a perforated pipe 16 and the hydroxide is lifted by compressed air from a pump 17 through a pipe 18 into a strainer 13 at the top of the tower. Peroxide is retained in the strainer 13, and the excess hydroxide as it falls down the tower against the air which is rising to the outlet is further oxidized and more peroxide is collected in a second strainer 14 and is removed by helical blades 15. In both forms of apparatus hydroxide is fed as required.
