Abstract

An edging strip for fitting to an edge of a sheet of material such as glass consists of two parts which when fitted together define a channel for receiving the edge. One part 3 provides a flat surface 5, a hook member 7 and a further surface 13 transverse to the flat surface. The other part is of L-shaped cross section with one limb providing a flat surface 15 and the other a hook member 17. With the hook members arranged in overlapped relation and the second part abutting against the further surface of the first part the channel is formed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Edging Strip This invention relates to an edging strip for a sheet of glass.
There are many applications where it is necessary for a sheet of glass, which constitutes a window, door, or the like, to have an edging strip positioned along at least one edge. When the sheet of glass is of rectangularform, itis usual to provide an edging strip around all four edges ofthe glass to form a frame. The edging strip mayform part of a hinge, or other supporting device, for the sheet of glass.
It is desirablethatthis edging strip should be of relatively simple construction and one which enables itto be readily fitted to the edge ofthe glass and from which it cannot readily be removed.
According to the present invention, an edging strip forasheetofglasscomprisesafirstelongatepart which provides a flat surface, a hook member projecting outwardly from said flat surface and afurther surface transverse to the firstflat surface, a second elongate part of substantially L-shaped crosssection, one limb ofthe second part providing a flat surface and the other limb ofthe second part providing a hook member projecting outwardly from said flat surface, the arrangement being such that, with the hook members arranged in overlapping hooked relation, and said other limb ofthe second part abut- ting against the further surface of the first part, the two flat surfaces constitute a pair of inside walls of a channel for receiving an edge of a sheet of glass.
To assemble the edging strip on a sheet ofglass, the edge portion of the sheet of glass is rested against the flat surface provided by the first elongate part and the second elongate part is arranged with the flat surface against the opposite face of the glass.
The two hook members are then forced into overlapping relation, where the hooks hooktogetherto hold the two elongate parts together and prevent them from being withdrawn from one another. The abutting action of the limb of the second elongate part against the surface on the first elongate part prevents the two parts from being moved relative to each other allowing the glass to be withdrawn from the channel. Once the two parts have been urged towards each other, so that the hook members are arranged in overlapping hooked relation, it is not possible to remove the edging strip from the sheet of glass without damaging either the edging strip or the glass.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, it will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional plan showing an edging strip applied to one edge of a sheet of glass An edging strip 1 is made up of two parts 3,5, respectively. Each part is of elongate form and is, conveniently, a metal extrusion such as aluminium, which can be cut to the appropriate length. Part 3 provides aflatsurface 5 and has a hook member7 pro jectingoutwardlyfrom it.Thehookmemberhasa surface 9 extending substantially parallel to the surface 5 and there is an end portion 11 which is terminated in afurthersurface 13 which istransverseto the surface 5 and, conveniently, at right angles thereto.
The second elongate part 5 is of L-shaped crosssection. One limb ofthis part provides a flat surface 15 and the other limb constitutes a hook member 17 having a surface 19 which corresponds to the surface 9 on the part 3.
To secure the edging strip on to the edge of a sheet of glass 21, a waterproof membrane 23 is applied to one face of the glass adjacent its edge and the glass is pressed against the flat surface 5 of the member 3. A similarmembrane 25 is appliedtothe oppositeface of the sheet of glass and the second part 5 is urged against this face of the glass so that it is abutting againstthesurface 1 5 of the second part. Thetwo parts 3, 5 are urged towards each other until the hook members 7, 17 are arranged in overlapping relation with the surfaces 9, 19 in abutment. These surfaces 9, 19 prevent the parts 3,5 from being moved away from each other. The limb 17 ofthe part 5 also abuts againstthefurthersurface 13 on the part3 and this prevents the surfaces 9, 19 from being disengaged.
Once the two parts 3, 5 have been pushed together against opposite faces of the sheet of glass 21 and the surfaces 9, 19 have come into hooked relation with the part 5, also abutting against the surface 13 ofthe part 3, the edging strip cannot be separated without damaging the strip or breaking the glass.
The edging strip may be of more complex form and it may be incorporated in some type of hardware associated with hinged, sliding or lift out windows, e.g. rollers, balances, hinges, catches, handles, etc.,but it includes first and second elongate parts which provide the channel for receiving an edge of a sheet of glass.
It may be desirableto applyan edging stripto all four edges of a rectangular sheet of glass, the strips being mitred at the corners to produce a framewhich surrounds a sheet of glass. This provides a corner fixing method which requires no welding or screws and lends itself to automatic production equipment.
When the edging strip constitutes a frame for a window, one ofthefirst elongate members may be provided with one or more grooves, each of which accommodates a weatherseal. Furthermore, the first elongate member may be provided with an additional groove into which a corner cleat can be located to stabilise the frame.
