Abstract

A machine for slicing bread comprises several cutting blades (6) movable towards or away from one another for adjustment of the bread slice thickness. The adjusting mechanism comprises two shafts (1,2) respectively provided with opposite handed threads at one end and linked by a chain (11) and sprockets (7,7.1). A set of guides (3) is mounted on each shaft (1, 2) and joined together by articulated lever arms (4). The end holders of each set engage the threads of their respective shafts and are moved laterally by turning handle (5). The remaining holders are moved proportionately, via the lever arms (4). The blades (6) are mounted in a vertically reciprocable frame (9) by bearings (10) which allow lateral movement of the blades. Members (13) attached to the ends of each blade pass through the guides (3). A similar adjustment mechanism may be provided in a pusher for feeding loaves past the blades. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Machine for slicing bread The invention relates to machines for slicing bread.
A known bread-slicing machine is characterised by one or more frames bearing cutting blades or saws, the base or bottom surface of the frame oscillating and moving vertically when the piece of bread is inserted, and cutting it by using a catch or thrust means which pushes the bread horizontally up to the frame(s) bearing the cutting saws.
The improvements according to the invention are characterised by the factthat an adjusting means is incorporated so as to adjust the cut of the bread to the desired thickness and size.
The adjusting means can be used to move the cutting blades or knives together or apart as required, leaving them fixed at the distance for the required cutting thickness.
According to the invention there is provided a machine for slicing bread, comprising an adjusting mechanism for adjusting the cut of the piece of bread to the required thickness or size, means being provided for moving the cutting blades or saws towards or away from one another as required, with means which hold the saws fixed at the distance for the required thickness of cut.
The invention will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. lisa front view in section of a machine embodying the invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are part views of two alternative lever assemblies in the machine; Fig. 4 is a detailed side view of a part of the machine; Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal section of the machine; and Fig. 6 and 7 illustrate two more alternative lever assemblies in the machine.
Fig. 1 is a front view in section of the machine in general, showing two shafts 1 and 2, threaded at both ends so that one end has a left-hand thread and the other end has a right-hand thread, the shafts bearing a number of holders 3 (shown in greater detail in lateral section in Fig. 4) connected together by movable lever arms 4which rotate on bearing pivots 8 when a wheel 5 is rotated in one direction, so that the entire assembly moves apart and separates the cutting blades or knives 6, whereas rotation in the other direction brings the knives closer together; the motion is brought about in the top and bottom assembly by gears 7 having a 1:1 ratio and interconnected by a chain transmission 11, so that when wheel 5 is rotated, both assemblies move in the same desired direction through the interior of frame 9, supported on bearings 10, which guide the motion of the assembly and maintain constant distances between the cutting blades or knives 5 in the entire assembly.
Figs. 2 and 3 show details of the various possibilities of the assembly of multiple levers 4, which rotate on pivots 8 in an accordion-like motion by moving the cutting blades or knives 6 together or apart as required.
Figs. 2 and 3 shows two out of the various possibilities obtained by the use of multiple levers 4.
Fig. 4 is a detailed side vies of one holder 3 mounted on shaft 1 and shaft 15, on which it slides when pressed by the set of multiple levers 4 when shaft 1 is rotated via wheel 5, thus moving shaft 13, which slides vertically through holder 3 and is guided in lateral motion by bearings 10, which are fitted inside frames 9 and are mounted on shafts 14 and 14.1 which are for securing and clamping the cutting blades or knives 6, in co-operation with threaded spivot 16 and nuts 17 and 17.1.
Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal section of the machine, showing a chain transmission assembly 19 which, via a sprocket 7.1, is used for moving pinions 18 and 18.1 disposed alongside a set of multiple levers 4 identical with those moving the knives or saws 6 so that, after coupling the catch or means for pushing the piece to be cut, the distance between the catches can be adjusted so that they are always situated at the centre of the space between the blades or saws 6 and are actuated so that when wheel 5 is actuated the assembly of saws -of knives 6 move, and the assembly of catches exerts thrust at the same time and at the same distance.
Fig. 6 is a front view of a shaft on which a set of holders are mounted and are joined together by multiple levers and separated by springs 20, so that when pressure is exerted at the ends, the entire assembly is compressed or stretched, the effect being similar two that obtained by the set of multiple levers shown in Fig. 4 and in the assembly in Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 shows another possible variant of the system in which a set of open springs 21 are disposed between the holders sliding on a shaft, and the springs connect the holders so that, as in Fig. 6, when pressure is exerted at the ends, the holder sliding on a shaft are brought together or moved apart.
The invention, in its essential features, can be put into practice in other embodiments differing in detail from those given by way of example in the specification but likewise covered by the claims. The device can also be constructed in any shape and size from the most suitable materials and means.
1. A machine for slicing bread, comprising an adjusting mechanism for adjusting the cut of the piece of bread to the required thickness or size, means being provided for moving the cutting blades or saws towards or away from one another as required, with means which hold the saws fixed at the distance for the required thickness of cut.
