Abstract
An extra handle (1) of a hand-operated machine comprises a hand-grip (8) having secured therein a tail piece (9) connected by a threaded connection to a brace (10) on which there are arranged for displacement relative to each other two semi-clamps (13, 14) embracing the housing (2) of the machine. The tail piece (9) is of a stepped configuration, a step (15) of smaller diameter is accommodated on its free end; one step (15) having a right-hand thread, the other step (16) having a left-hand thread. The step (15) is threadingly connected to the brace (10), whereas the step (16) is connected to the semi-clamp (14). The semi-clamps (13, 14) are arranged so that the distance (b) between their ends (22, 23) in the fastened position of the extra handle (1) on the housing (2) of the hand-operated machine is less than the diameter (D) of the housing (2) embraced by the semi-clamps (13, 14). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Handle attachment for a hand-held device
This invention relates to hand-held devices such as machines provided with shock-and-rotating action tools. More particularly, the invention concerns a handle attachment for such hand-operated machines.
The invention can find application in handoperated percussive machines, such as those employed for hammer drilling or perforating in civil engineering, machine tool industry, or used in home appliances.
According to the invention there is provided a handle attachment for a hand-held device, comprising a hand- grip, a spindle fast with the hand-grip and including two longitudinal sections with oppositely handed screw threads, and a pair of clamping jaws for embracing the device to clamp the attachment securely thereto, said jaws being coupled to the respective spindle sections whereby rotation of the hand grip relative to the jaws causes the jaws to move in opposite directions along the spindle.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment the invention resides in an extra handle of a handoperated machine comprising a hand-grip having secured therein a tail piece threadingly connected to a brace on which there are arranged for displacement relative to each other two semi-clamps embracing the housing to each other two semiclamps embracing the housing of the hand-operated machine, according to the invention, the tail piece is of a stepped configuration, a step of smaller diameter being accommodated on its free end, one of the steps of the tail piece having a right-hand thread, whereas the other step has a left-hand thread, the step of smaller diameter being threadingly connected to the brace, whereas the step of larger diameter is threadingly connected to the semiclamp, the semi-clamps being arranged such that the distance between their ends in the fastened position of the extra handle on the housing of the hand-operated machine is less than the diameter of this housing embraced by the semi-clamps.
The stepped arrangement of the tail piece of the extra handle and the provision of threads cut in the opposite direction on each of the steps enables for one revolution of the handle to move the semiclamps apart a distance equal to two thread pitches of said threads and to thereby reduce the amount of time expendable for fastening the extra handle on the housing and removing it therefrom. The open construction of the semi-clamps makes it possible to remove the extra handle from the housing of the hand-operated machine without resorting to completely disassembling it, regardless of the size of the housing and the machine spindle.
The aforedescribed advantages make it possible to considerably reduce the time necessary for auxiliary pre-operation procedures and thereby increase the operating efficiency of the hand-operated machine.
The invention will now be described in greater detail with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a general view of a hand-operated machine with an extra handle attached to its housing;
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line I-I in Figure 1 of the extra handle secured on the housing of the hand-operated machine; and
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line ll-ll in
Figure 2 of the extra handle according to the invention.
With reference to Figure 1,there is shown an extra handle 1 secured to a housing 2 of a hand-operated machine 3. A spindle 4 of the machine 3 has secured therein a tool for drilling a material indicated ganerally by 6. In order to restrict the depth of drilling, this extra handle 1 is provided with a hole depth metering gauge 7.
The extra handle 1 of the hand-operated machine 3 also comprises a hand-grip 8 having a tail-piece 9 (Figure 2) secured therein and connected to a brace 10. The brace 10 is secured in holes 11 and 12 of semi-clamps 13 and 14, respectively. The semiclamps 13 and 14 are capable of longitudinal displacement relative to the axis of the hand-grip 8.
The tail piece 9 is of a stepped configuration, particularly having steps 15 and 16, the step 15 of smaller diameter being arranged at the free end of the tail piece 9. The step 15 has a right-hand thread engageable with a response thread made in a hole 17 ofthe brace 10.
The step 16 of larger diameter has a left-hand thread to engage with a response thread made in a hole 18 of the semi-clamp 14.
The brace 10 has a hole 19 to receive the hole depth metering gauge 7. This gauge 7 is pressed to the wall of the hole 19 buy a ball 20 spring-loaded by means of a spring 21. The ball and spring assembly are disposed inside the hole 17 of the brace 10.
The semi-clamps 13 and 14 are not closed. They are adapted to embrace the housing 2 during a locked position of the extra handle 1. The distance b between ends 22 and 23 of the semi-clamps 13 and 14, respectively, is less than the diameter D of the housing 2 embraceable by the semi-clamps 13 and 14.
A pin 24 is fixedly secured in the semi-clamp 14, the free end of this pin 24 being received by a response hole 25 of the semi-clamp 13. The brace 10 has a shoulder 26. The semi-clamp 13 has a hole 27 extending to a depth "1", the shape of this hole 27 conforming to the shape of cross-section of a portion 28 of the brace 10. The configuration of the portion 28 and hole 27 prevent rotation of the brace 10 relative to the semi-clamp 13.
The portion 28 of the brace 10 has longitudinal flats 29 (Figure 3). A hole 30 is further provided in the semi-clamp 13 for the hole depth metering gauge 7 (Figure 2) to extend therethrough.
The extra handle 1 (Figure 1) is attached to the housing 2 of the hand-operated machine 3 by rotating the hand-grip 8 and, accordingly, the tail piece 9 (Figure 2) relative to the brace 10. Because the step 15 of smaller diameter is threadingly connected to the brace 10, the brace 10 tends to move lengthwise of the step 15. By means of the hole depth metering gauge 7 placed in the hole 19 the brace loins thrust against the walls of the hole 30 (Figure 3) of the semi-clamp 13 to move it toward the semi-clamp 14 (Figure 2).
At the same time, the semi-clamp 14 threadingly connected to the step 16 of larger diameter of the tail piece 9 is caused to move along the brace 10 toward the semi-clamp 13.
The provision in the tail piece 9 of the step 16 having a left-hand thread and step 15 having a right-hand thread ensures that for one revolution of the hand-grip 8 the semi-clamps 13 and 14 are displaced toward each other a distance equal to a sum of thread pitches in the steps 15 and 16 of the tail piece 9. This allows to accelerate the attachment of the extra handle 1, or vary its position relative to housing 2. The free end of the pin 24 moves inside the hole 25 of the semi-clamp 13 thereby preventing rotation of the semi-clamps 13 and 14 relative to each other. The rotation of the grip 8 and, consequently, the movement of the semi-clamps 13 and 14 toward each other continue until the housing 2 is tightly embraced by these semi-clamps 13 and 14.
This will correspond to a fastened position of the extra handle 1 on the housing 2. Afurther rotation of the grip 8 causes substantial frictional forces to arise between the engageable surfaces of the semiclamps 13, and the housing 2. These forces of friction thereby prevent rotation of the extra handle 1 relative to the housing 2. A force of friction also tends to arise between the hole depth metering gauge 7 and the semi-clamp 13 to prevent displacement of the gauge 7 in the hole 19 of the brace 10.
In the attached or fastened position of the extra handle 1 the distance b between the open ends 22 and 23 of the semi-clamps 13,14 is less than the diameter D of the housing 2 embraceable by the semi-clamps 13,14, whereby the extra handle 1 cannot be removed from the housing 2 without rotating the hand-grip 8.
The extra handle 1 can be fastened on the housing 2 without the hole depth metering gauge 7. In this case rotation of the hand-grip 8 will cause displace mentofthe brace 10 along the step 15forits shoulder 26 to bear on the semi-clamp 13 and move it toward the semi-clamp 14. Thereafter, the stages of fastening of the extra handle 1 on the housing 2 will be substantially similar to what has been described previously.
Removal of the extra handle 1 from the housing 2 is carried out in a reverse manner. During rotation of the grip 8 and, accordingly, the tail piece 9 in a direction opposite to that in which they were rotated forfastening the handle 1 on the housing 2 the brace 10 with the semi-clamp 13 tend to move along the threaded connection between the brace 10 and step 15 of small diameter along the tail piece 9 to thereby depart from the semi-clamp 14. Concurrently, the semi-clamp 14 moves along the tail piece 9 departing from the semi-clamp 13, to result in that the extra handle 1 can freely rotate about the housing 2 to assume any position suitable for the operator.A further rotation of the handgrip 8 of the extra handle 1 acts to space the semi-clamps 13 and 14from each other so that the distance b between their ends 22 and 23 becomes greater than the diameter D of the housing 2. Therewith, the extra handle 1 can be easily removed from the housing 2. The provision of the open ends 22 and 23 in the semi-clamps 13 and 14 allows to remove the handle 1 from the housing 1 without resorting to completely disassembling it, which shortens the time necessary for auxiliary operations to result in turn in increased machine operating efficiency.
The hand-operated machine 3 (Figure 3) provided with the herein proposed extra handle 1 operates in the following manner.
This handle 1 is turned relative to the housing 2 to select a suitable operating position, while the handgrip 8 is rotated to fasten the handle 1 on the housing 2. Simultaneously, the hole depth metering gauge 7 is also affixed relative to the housing 2. A tool 5 if fitted into the spindle 4. Drilling of the material 6 is accompanied by intermittent jamming of the tool in various inclusions of such a material.
This causes a moment of force developed by the drive means of the machine to be transmitted to the housing 2 forthe latter to rotate about the tool 5. By virtue of the fact that the hand-grip 8 is spaced a substantial distance from the longitudinal centerline of the tool 5, which is also the axis of rotation of the housing 2, the operator is capable by applying a small amount of force to the hand-grip 8 to prevent the rotation of the housing 2 of the machine 3 and thus escape damage to his hands or any other possible accident.
By taking the machine 3 away from the material 6 being drilled the tool 5 is prevented from jamming and rotation or percussive action thereof is resumed.
The drilling is thus recommenced to be continued until the hole depth metering gauge is brought in contact with the surface of the material 6. A further advance of the tool to the material 6 is thus terminated. By securing the hole depth metering gauge 7 in a desired position it is possible to adjust and control and depth of holes made in the material 6.
In the course of drilling the material 6 auxiliary pre-operation procedures take a considerable amount of time. The provision of the extra handle 1 with the tail piece 9 (Figure 2) having the two steps 15 and 16 provided with threads cut in the opposite directions enables for one revolution of the handgrip 8 to move the semi-clamps 13 and 14 relative to each other by a distance of two threads of the steps 15 and 16. Such an arrangement of the extra handle 1 makes it possible to reduce the time expendable for attachment and fastening of the handle on the housing 2. The provision of the semi-clamps 13 and 14with open ends 22 and 23 enables to remove the extra handle 1 from the housing 1 without resorting to a disassembly of the handle 1, which also reduces the time necessary for removing the handle 1 from the housing 2. Reduction of time consumed for auxiliary pre-operation procedures makes it possible to shorten the overall time required for drilling the material 6 (Figure 1) to thereby increase the operating efficiency of the hand-operated machine 3.
Claims (4)
1. A handle attachment for a hand-held device, comprising a hand-grip, a spindle fast with the handgrip and including two longitudinal sections with oppositely handed screw threads, and a pair of clamping jaws for embracing the device to clamp the attachment securely thereto, said jaws being coupled to the respective spindle sections whereby rotation of the hand grip relative to the jaws causes the jaws to move in opposite directions along the spindle.
2. A handle attachment according to claim 1, wherein the jaws are interconnected by means preventing relative rotation therebetween about the spindle axis.
3. An extra handle of a hand-operated machine comprising a hand-grip having secured therein a tail piece connected by a threaded connection to a brace on which there are arranged for displacement relative to each other two semi-clamps embracing the housing of the hand-operated machine, the tail piece being of a stepped configuration, a step of smaller diameter being accommodated on its free end, one of the steps of the tail piece having a right-hand thread, whereas the other step has a left hand thread, the step of smaller diameter being threadingly connected to the brace, whereas the step of larger diameter is threadingly connected to the semiclamp, the semi-clamps being arranged such that the distance between their ends in the fastened position of the extra handle on the housing of the hand-operated machine is less than the diameter of this housing embraced by the semi-clamps.
4. An extra handle of a hand-operated machine substantially as described in the description with reference to the accompanying drawings.
