Abstract

A disappearing rotary knob (3) for adjusting switching or control devices disposed behind a switch cover (1) with an exchangeable front face (2) in household appliances such as cookers, washing machines or the like, is constructed in the form of a hollow cylindrical member. The end face of the hollow cylindrical rotary knob (3) is closed by an exchangeable knob cap (5) which is held on the rotary knob (3) by means of a snap connection. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Disappearing rotary knob This invention relates to a disappearing rotary knob for the adjustment of switching or control devices disposed behind a switch cover with an exchangeable front face in household appliances such as cookers, washing machines or the like.
Disappearing rotary knobs of this type are generally known.
In order to be able to adapt cookers to the most varied decorative fronts of the kitchen furniture in a simple manner, it is also known to make the front face of the switch cover of the cooker exchangeable. Now if such a front face of a switch cover is exchanged thus adapting the cooker in question to the particular decorative front of the line of kitchen furniture installed, the rotary knobs are often no longer in harmony with the exchanged front face of the switch cover. An exchange of the complete rotary knob would involve high installation costs and also storage costs for keeping rotary knobs available to suit the most varied decorative fronts of kitchens.
It is the object of the invention to improve the design of a disappearing rotary knob so that this can likewise be adapted to the front face of the switch cover used in each case, with the minimum expense.
The solution to this problem consists in that the rotary knob is constructed in the form of a hollow cylindrical member and that the end face of the hollow cylindrical rotary knob is closed by an exchangeable knob cap.
As a result of the invention the effect is achieved that the rotary knob can remain on the appliance and that as a result of exchanging their knob caps, the rotary knobs form a front face of the switch cover of uniform appearance in their sunk position.
It is true that a rotary adjusting handle for household appliances is known from DE-GM 82 33 108, the front face of which is formed by a superimposed cap. This rotary adjusting handle is not adapted for disappearing, however, so that the special problems on which the invention is based are not present here.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a switch cover with a disappearing rotary knob, the rotary knob being shown in the operating position, and Figure 2 is a similar view showing the rotary knob in the position of rest.
Referring to the drawings, the switch cover of a household appliance, for example of a cooker, is designated by 1 and is provided with an exchangeable front face 2 (interchangeable front) of glass or the like. A rotary knob 3 which is constructed in the form of a hollow cylindrical member, is accommodated in the switch cover 1, being axially displaceable on a knob shaft 4 in such a manner that when it is in the sunk position (position of rest) it ends flush with the front face 2 of the switch cover 1. The end face of the rotary knob 3 constructed in the form of an open hollow cylindrical member is closed by an exchangeable knob cap 5 which is held on the hollow cylindrical rotary knob 3 by means of a snap connection. Thus the possibility is afforded that the rotary knob 3, made in a neutral colour, can be adapted to the colour of the particular front face 2 of the switch cover 1 used by exchanging or interchanging the knob cap 5 with a few movements of the hand.
1. A disappearing rotary knob for the adjustment of switching or control devices disposed behind a switch cover with an exchangeable front face in household appliances such as cookers, washing machines or the like, said rotary knob being constructed in the form of a hollow cylindrical member and the end face of the hollow-cylindrical rotary knob being closed by an exchangeable knob cap.
2. A rotary knob as claimed in claim 1, wherein the knob cap is held on the rotary knob by means of a snap connection.
3. A disappearing rotary knob, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
4. A household appliance incorporating a disappearing rotary knob, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
