Abstract

One or more knobs (9) are mounted in apertures (5a) of the top operation panel (5) of a washing machine e.g. for operating a program timer (8). The knob (9) is retractable between projected and unprojected positions to reduce size for packaging, to prevent entry of dust etc. and to heave the top of the machine free of obstructions. The retraction mechanism may include a heart-shaped cam (Figs 5, 6). It is stated that rocker button operating member may also be so mounted. <IMAGE>

Description

CLOTHES WASHING MACHINE This invention relates to clothes washing machines wherein an operation panel is mounted on the top of the clothes washing machine body.
In conventional clothes washing machines, an operation box is mounted on the top rear portion of the body thereof so as to be projected upward and an operation panel is mounted on the front side of the operation box. Recently, it has been proposed that the top face of the washing machine body be flattened for the purpose of improving appearance of the clothes washing machine. In this regard, in the clothes washing machines equipped with a microcomputer, only touch type switches are provided in the operation panel and consequently, the operation panel is generally flat.
Accordingly, when the operation panel is mounted on the top of the washing machine body, the body top is flattened.
On the other hand, in the case of the clothes washing machines wherein a mechanical timer is employed, an operation knob of the timer is projected on the operation panel. Accordingly, when the operation panel is mounted on the top of the washing machine body, the operation knob is projected thereon and accordingly, the body top cannot be flattened. Furthermore, when such clothes washing machines are packaged for shipment, a cushioning material composed of foamed plastic is put into the packages together with the machines. The thickness of the cushioning material needs to be increased for the protection of the operation knobs projected on the operation panel, resulting in increase in the production cost of the clothes washing machine and large-sized packaged products.
Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide a clothes washing machine wherein the body top can be flattened and the packaging cost can be reduced with the packaged products reduced in size.
4 clothes washing machine of the present invention comprises a body having a top, an operation panel provided on the top of said body, said operation panel having one or more apertures formed therethrough, one or more operated members provided inside said operation panel, and one or more operation knobs provided in the apertures of said operation panel for operating said operated members respectively, each said operation knob being retractable between positions of projected and unprojected states.
It is preferable that each said operation knob have an upper end substantially planar to said operation panel when occupying the position of the unprojected state and comprise a base portion and a cover member covering the base portion It is preferable that each said cover member have a flange formed on the outer periphery thereof so as to be overlapped with each aperture of said operation panel from the inside.
Preferably, each said operation knob comprises a base mounted on said operated member, a moving member attached to said base so as to cover the same, said moving member being retractable between positions of projected and unprojected states relative to the operation panel and movable together with said base, a coil spring interposed between said base and moving member for urging said moving member in the direction that the same is projected, a heart-shaped cam provided on said base, and a lock pin provided on said moving member and engageable with said heart shaped cam so that said moving member is held at the positions or tne projected and unprojected states.
It is preferable that each said cover member have an outer peripheral wall extending toward each said operated member and each said operated member has an annular wall inserted inside said outer peripheral wall of each said operated member so that said annular wall is partly overlapped with said outer peripheral wall of each said operated member.
It is further preferable that each said cover member has a flange formed on the outer periphery of said outer peripheral wall thereof.
The invention will now be described, merely by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of an operation knob which is in the unprojected state, the operation knob being employed in a clothes washing machine of an embodiment in accordance with the invention; FIG. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the operation knob which is in the projected state; FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the clothes washing machine; FIG. 4 is a top view of the operation knob; FIGS. 5 and 6 are views showing a positional relationship between a lock pin and heart-shaped cam; and FIG. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of a water inlet and its peripheral portion.
An embodiment wherein the present invention has been applied to a twin-tub type washing machine will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Referring first to FIG. 3, an outer cabinet 1 of the twin-tub type washing machine encloses a tub assembly 2 including a wash tub and dehydration tub (neither shown) integrally formed. An upper flange 2a of the tub assembly 2 is fitted with the upper end of the outer cabinet 1. A base frame 3 is provided at the lower portion of the outer cabinet 1- and wash and dehydration motors (neither shown) are mounted on the base frame 3. A washing machine body 4 is thus comprised of the base frame 3, outer cabinet 1 and tub assembly 2. The front surface of the body 4 is formed so as to be expanded outwardly such that the clothes washing machine has a generally roundish configuration. A generally flat operation panel 5 is mounted at the rear of the top of the body 4.A wash-tub lid 6 is detachably mounted at the wash tub side of the top of the body 4 for opening and closing the upper opening of the wash tub. A dehydrationtub lid 7 is mounted at the dehydration tub side of the top of the body 4 for opening and closing an upper opening of the dehydration tub. The dehydration-tub lid 7 is rotatable about the rear portion thereof. The washing machine body top thus including the wash-tub and dehydration-tub lids 6, 7 and operation panel 5 is substantially flat when these lids are closed.
An operation knob 9 for operating a wash timer 8 (see FIG. 1) serving as an operated member is provided in the wash tub side end of the operation panel 5 and an operation knob 10 for water supply means (not shown) as another operated member for selectively supplying water to either of the wash or dehydration tub is provided at the right of the operation knob 9. A cylindrical water inlet 11 is provided at the right-hand side of the operation knob 10 so that a water supply hose (not shown) is connected thereto. The water inlet 11 faces an opening formed in the operation panel 5. The distal end of the water inlet 11 has substantially the same height as the top of the operation panel 5 and arranged so as not to be projected from the operation panel top. An operation knob 12 for operating a dehydration timer (not shown) serving as further another operated member is provided at the dehydration tub side of the operation panel 5. The above-described operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 are retractable between positions of projected and unprojected states relative to the operation panel 5 and the construction for retracting each knob is substantially the same. Therefore, only the operation knob 9 will now be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6.
Referring to FIG. 2, the wash timer 8 is secured by screws to a base panel 13 provided below the operation panel 5. The wash timer 8 comprises a suitable conventional mechanical timer and has a shaft 14 on its upper portion for setting a timer period in accordance with a rotative movement angle thereof. The operation knob 9 is secured to the upper end of the shaft 14. The operation panel 5 has a through-hole Sa through which the operation knob 9 is inserted to be rotatable. The operation knob 9 comprises a knob base 15 and a cover member 16 fitted with the knob base 15 so as to cover the same. The knob base 15 will be described in detail hereinafter. The upper end of the shaft 14 is fitted in a hole 17a formed in a base member 17, thereby securing the base member 17 to the shaft 14.A moving member 18 is attached to the base member 17 so as to cover the same and be movable upwardly and downwardly as viewed in FIGS. 1 and 2. The moving member 18 is inserted through the hole 5a of the operation panel 5. The moving member 18 occupies the lower position in FIG. 1 to thereby be in an unprojected state and the upper position in FIG. 2 to thereby be in a projected state. The moving member 18 is thus allowed to move between the positions of the projected and unprojected states relative to the operation panel 5.
The moving member 18 is rotatable together with the base member 17. The moving member 18 is further movable slightly downward from the lower position. A compression coil spring 19 is interposed between the inner upper portion of the moving member 18 and an accommodating groove 17b formed in the upper portion of the base member 17. The compression coil spring 19 usually urges the moving member 18 in the direction that the same is projected or upwardly.
A generally L-shaped lock pin 20 is mounted on the moving member 18 so that a distal end 20a thereof is positioned at the inner right-hand lower portion of the moving member 18, as shown in FIG. 2. At the right-hand side of the base member 17, a heart-shaped cam 21 is formed so as to be engaged with the distal end 20a of the lock pin 20. The cam 21 generally has the shape of a heart such as shown in FIG. 5. A circumferential cam groove 22 is formed along the circumference of the cam 21. As shown in FIG. 5, when the moving member 18 occupies the upper position, the distal end 20a of the lock pin 20 is positioned at the upper end of the groove 22 to be held in the position.When the moving member 18 is moved downwardly against the spring 19, the distal end 20a of the lock pin 20 is accordingly moved along the groove 22 in the direction of arrows A to be thereby positioned at a lower concave portion 21a of the cam 21, as shown in FIG. 6. Consequently, the moving member 18 is positioned at the lower position and held in the position. In this state, when the moving member 18 is slightly moved downward against the spring 19, the distal end 20a of the lock pin 20 is accordingly moved from the concave portion 21a along the groove 22 obliquely downward in the directions of arrows B. Thereafter, when the moving member 18 depressed is released, the compression coil spring 19 forces the moving member 18 to move upward, resulting in the movement of the lock pin end 20a along the cam groove 22 in the directions of the arrows B.As a result, the lock pin end 20a is positioned at the upper end of the groove 22 as shown in FIG. 5. Accordingly, the moving member 18 occupies the upper position and held in the position. Thus, the knob base 15 comprises the base member 17, moving member 18, compression coil spring 19, lock pin 20 and heart-shaped cam 21 as described above. As the result of the abovedescribed construction, the knob base 15 or operation knob 9 is held in the positions of the projected or unprojected states and may be selectively held in either position by depression of the operation knob 9. Suitable stepped portions, inclinations and the like are formed in the groove 22 so that the distal end 20a of the lock pin 20 is moved in the circumferential groove 22 of the heart-shaped cam 21 only in the directions of the arrows A and B.
The cover member 16 is fitted with the moving member 18. The cover member 16 has a number of grooves extended vertically formed in the outer periphery thereof and the grooved portion serves as a non-slip portion 16a. The upper end of the cover member 16 or the operation knob 9 is substantially planar to the upper face of the operation panel 5 when the moving member 18 is in the lower position as shown in FIG. 1. In this state; the operation knob 9 is in the unprojected state. On the other hand, when the moving member 18 occupies the upper position as shown in FIG. 2, the cover member 16 is projected relative to the upper face of the operation panel 5. In this state, the operation knob 9 is in the projected state.
The cover member 16 has a flange-like wall 16b integrally formed below the outer peripheral non-slip portion 16a such that the wall 16b is overlapped with the peripheral edge of the through-hole 5a of the operation panel 5 from the inside. A peripheral wall portion 16c is integrally formed on the outer periphery of the flange-like wall 16b so as to extend toward the side of the wash timer 8 or downward. The diameter of the peripheral wall portion 16c is larger than that of the non-slip portion 16a. The peripheral wall portion 1 6c has a flange portion 16d integrally formed on the lower end thereof. The wash timer 8 has an annular wall portion 23 formed on the upper surface thereof so as to upwardly extend and the annular wall portion 23 is inserted inside the peripheral wall portion 16c so as to be partly overlapped therewith.The annular wall portion 23 is overlapped with the peripheral wall portion 1 6c even when the operation knob 9 is in the projected state.
A water supply connector 24 is detachably attached to the water supply inlet 11 as shown in FIG. 7. The connector 24 has a generally cylindrical L-shaped configuration and one end 24a (the lower end in the drawing) thereof is fitted in the inlet 11. A water supply hose (not shown) is connected to the other end 24b of the water supply connector 24. When the water supply connector 24 is to be disconnected from the inlet 11, an elastic strip 24d having a claw 24c formed on the left-hand distal end of the end 24a is deformed in the right as viewed in the drawing, thereby disengaging the claw 23c from the opening of the operation panel 5. Thereafter, the water supply connector 24 is drawn upwardly as viewed in the drawing.
In accordance with the above-described construction, since the operation panel 5 is mounted on the top of the washing machine body 4, it is substantially flat.
Furthermore, the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 are retractable between the positions of the projected and unprojected states. Accordingly, when need not be operated, the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 in the projected state are depressed so that the compression coil spring 17, lock pin 20, heart-shaped cam 21 and the like are operated to thereby retract the operation knobs to the respective positions of the unprojected state (see FIG. 1) relative to the operation panel 5. Consequently, the top of the body 4 may be flattened. Since the body top may thus be flattened, articles are allowed to be placed thereon and the cleaning such as scrubbing may be performed with ease. Furthermore, when the washing machine is packaged with the body top flattened, the dimensions of the cushioning material need not be increased because of absence of the projected portions.As a result, the cost of the washing machine is reduced and the packaged products may be reduced in size.
On the other hand, when need to be operated, each of the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 in the unprojected state is slightly depressed so that the compression coil spring 17, lock pin 20, heart-shaped cam 21 and the like are operated to thereby project each of the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 to the position of the projected state (see FIG. 2) relative to the operation panel 5. Consequently, the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 may be suitably operated.
In the above-described embodiment, since the upper surfaces of the operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 are substantially planar to the operation panel 5 when the knobs are in the unprojected state, foreign matters such as dust may be prevented from entering the interior of the operation panel 5. Furthermore, in the foregoing embodiment, the operation knob 9 comprises the knob base 15 and cover member 16, and the cover member 16 is fitted in the moving member 18 of the knob base 15. In this regard, where the cover member 16 is formed integrally with the moving member 18, a forming die becomes complicated and the configuration of the operation knob has some limitation. However, since the moving member 18 is formed independently of the cover member 16 and fitted therewith after formation in the foregoing embodiment, the productivity may be improved.Moreover, the configuration of the operation knobs has no such limitation, which improves the appearance of the clothes washing machine.
In the foregoing embodiment, the flange-like wall portion 16b is provided on the outer periphery of the cover member 16 of each of the operation knobs 9, 10, 12 so as to be overlapped with the peripheral edge of the through-hole 5a of the operation panel 5 from the inside. Consequently, the water may be prevented from splashing onto the shaft 14 of the wash timer 8 even when the water invades the inside of the operation panel 5 through a gap between the throughhole 5a of the operation panel 5 and the cover member 16, thereby improving the waterproof. Furthermore, since the peripheral wall portion 16c of the cover member 16 is partly overlapped with the annular wall portion 23 of the wash timer 8, the water invading from the gap between the hole 5a and cover member 16 may be prevented from splashing onto the shaft 14 of the wash timer 8, thereby further improving the waterproof. Additionally, since the flange portion 16d is formed on the lower end of the peripheral wall portion 16c of the cover member 16, the water is shaken off by the flange portion 16d when the water invading as described above flows along the cover member 16, thereby further improving the waterproof.
Although the invention has been applied to the rotatably moved operation knobs 9, 10 and 12 in the foregoing embodiment, the invention may be applied to those of the rocker button type and other types.
The foregoing disclosure and drawings are merely illustrative of the principles of the present invention and are not to be interpreted in a limiting sense. The only limitation is to be determined from the scope of the appended claims.

Claims (7)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A clothes washing machine comprising: a) a body having a top; b) an operation panel provided on the top of said body, said operation panel having one or more holes formed therethrough; c) one or more operated members provided inside said operation panel; and d) one or more operation knobs provided in the apertures of said operation panel for operating said operated members respectively, each said operation knob being retractable between positions of projected and unprojected states.
2. A clothes washing machine according to claim 1, wherein each said operation knob has an upper end substantially planar to said operation panel when occupying the position of the unprojected state
3. A clothes washing machine according to claim 1, wherein each said operation knob comprises a base portion and a cover member covering the base portion.
4. A clothes washing machine according to claim 3, wherein each said cover member has a flange formed on the outer periphery thereof so as to be overlapped with each aperture of said operation panel from the inside.
5. A clothes washing machine according to claim 3, wherein each said operation knob comprises: a) a base mounted on said operated member; b) a moving member attached to said base so as to cover the same, said moving member being retractable between positions of projected and unprojected states thereof relative to the operation panel and movable together with said base; c) a coil spring interposed between said base and moving member for urging said moving member in the direction that the operation knob is projected; d) a heart-shaped cam provided on said base; and e) a lock pin provided on said moving member and engageable with said heart-shaped cam so that said moving member is held at the positions of the projected and unprojected states of said operation knob.
6. A clothes washing machine according to claim 3, wherein each said cover member has an outer peripheral wall extending toward each said operated member and each said operated member has an annular wall inserted inside said outer peripheral wall of each said operated member so that said annular wall is overlapped with said outer peripheral wall of each said operated member.
7. A clothes washing machine according to claim 6, wherein each said cover member has a flange formed on the outer periphery of said outer peripheral wall thereof.
