Abstract

Folded filter packings are formed from rectangular sheets folded along parallel lines, the folds 3 being of rounded section and the elongated areas 2 between the fold lines being indented so that each fold line presents a zig-zag shape. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to chevroned structures suitable for use as filtration packing.
The present invention relates to "chevroned" structures, i.e. structures formed from sheet materials which are folded and "chevroned" in such a way as to produce filtration packing.
The chevroned structures are generally obtained by imprinting in the sheet material alternate lines forming cavities and in relief, delimiting the "chevrons," which latter are then accentuated by a simultaneous thrust and guiding action.
This gives a structure which is not only folded concertina-fashion but in which each strip extending between the folds is "chevroned." In the prior art an attempt was made to produce such structures by folding two strips of sheet material simultaneously, interposing between them a flexible and malleable strip serving to expose and release the structures after they had been given their chevron configuration. The resulting structures are asymmetrical, since the summits of the folds in contact with one face are pointed while those in contact with the other are rounded. Various tests were performed, and it was found that part of the packing, particularly in the case of air filters for motors, remained unused.
One of the purposes of the present invention is to remedy this drawback.
The present invention is aimed at structures of "chevroned" sheets produced from a rectangular sheet folded, on the one hand, along equidistant parallel lines, to form an accordion-type element having a series of identical strips delimited by the edge of the folds, each strip being given successive markings in order to cause the strips to assume a chevron configuration, the said structure being characterised by the fact that the base of each fold is rounded. It was found that this arrangement provided a noticeable improvement in the retaining capacity of an air filter.
The invention will now be described in greater detail by reference to a particular version constituting a mere example thereof and illustrated in the attached drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a structure in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation, on a larger scale, of the structure to which the invention relates.
As may be seen from Figure 1, the "chevroned" structure according to the invention is obtained from a sheet material 1 folded to form an accordion-type element having identical strips 2 separated by folds 3.
Each strip 2 is provided with markings 4 taking the form of adjacent parallelograms alternating in such a way that each strip has a chevron configuration.
The folds 3 are produced in such a manner that their bases are rounded, all the folds being identical.
It has thus been found that the performance of air filters in which such structures are used can be very considerably improved.
Needless to say, the invention is not confined to the embodiment described in the foregoing and illustrated in the attached drawings. Numerous modifications can be made thereto in matters of detail without thereby departing from the scope of the invention.
1. A structure, suitable for use as a filter packing, comprising a rectangular sheet which has been folded along substantially equidistant parallel lines to form an accordion-type element having a series of substantially identical strips delimited by the edges of the folds, each strip having successive markings which alternate in such a way as to cause the strip to assume a chevron configuration and the base of each fold being rounded.
2. A structure according to claim 1 wherein the chevron configuration is obtained by imprinting in the sheet material alternate lines forming cavities and in relief delimiting the chevrons which chevrons are accentuated by suitable thrust and guiding means.
3. A structure according to claim 1 or 2 for use as a packing for air filters.
4. A structure substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings and described herein with reference thereto.
