Abstract

To remove particulates a filter element comprises a sheet of porous cotton or glass fibre fabric folded into parallel pleats having the cross-section illustrated. The rounded folds enable a larger effective filtering area in a given space than the prior art V-section folds allow. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Filters This invention relates to filters for filtering fluids and made from sheets of flexible filtration material such as spun glass fibre or spun cotton. Such filters find application as air filters in, for example, air conditioning systems on railway coaches.
In order to provide such filters with a large surface area while at the same time containing them within a given space, it is known to form the sheet material with 'V' shaped pleats in concertina fashion. These filters have been failing prematurely because of the loading of the surface of the filters with dirt. To overcome this problem attempts have been made to increase the surface area. However, to in crease the surface area more pleats are required.
The disadvantage of this method of increasing the surface area is that the surface of the material at and adjacent the root of the 'V' is masked by an effective doubling of the thickness so that the depth of the space within the 'V' is reduced as shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings and to increase the number of pleats exacerbate this.
In order to increase the surface area of a filter and so overcome the aforesaid deficiency a filter in accordance with the invention has pleats formed with a blend radius or a linear equivalent or a combination thereof between the sides of the pleats.
Folding the material in this manner allows the full face area of the material to be utilised.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing, which shows a sectional view of one construction of filter in accordance with the invention.
In contrast to the filter of Fig. 1 which has pleats of 'V' shape, the filter of Fig. 2 has pleats with parallel sides 10 interconnected by radiused portions 11 which blend into the sides 10. As an alternative to each of the portions 11 a series of short straight lengths may be used which together will form the linear equivalent of a radiused portion 11.
Calculations show that for a 2460.5 mm.
length of material folded in 'V' form and a width of 542 mm. as shown in Fig. 1 the usable area is .64m2. Whereas as shown in Fig. 2 for a 2279.5 mm. length of material of the same width folded with parallel sides and a blend radius therebetween to be contained within the same length as the filter of Fig. 1 the usable area is 1.24 m2 for a filter of the same depth.
The invention is applicable to filters for the filtration of both gases and liquids.
1. A filter for filtering fluids to remove particulate material therefrom, the filter comprising a sheet of flexible filtration material folded into pleats, concertina fashion, characterised in that the pleats are formed with a blend radius, or a linear equivalent thereof or a combination of a blend radius and linear equivalent between the sides of the pleats.
2. A filter according to claim 1, wherein the pleats have parallel sides.
3. A filter substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
