Abstract

Constructional materials are made from developable chevroned structures by subjecting a sheet of material to be folded to an initial preforming operation by embossing its surface which embossing initiates the formation of the chevroned troughs of the structure to be made. Preferably, the bases of the troughs are rounded. The term "chevroned structure" is defined as in Specification 991,035. The sheets may be paper, metal or synthetic plastic. If the chevroned structures have broken ridge lines then the preforming operation is performed so as to create small troughs all along the broken ridge lines of these structures and also along the fold lines which connect the ridge lines, Figs. 4-6 (not shown). During the preforming operation, each face of the sheet to be chevroned may be initially provided with a series of embossed troughs which occupy the exact location of the future flanks of the structure to be formed so as to reinforce the flanks. Preferably, the troughs are embossed alternately in opposite directions so that each convex ridge of one flank lodges inside the concave trough of the flank facing it, Figs. 7-9 (not shown). The sheet to be folded may be corrugated or pleated. Figs. 10-12, 17 and 18 (all not shown), or may be a laminate comprising a corrugated or pleated sheet covered on one or both faces with a sheet having a smooth surface, Figs. 13-16, 19 and 20 (not shown). When the chevroned structure has been fully contracted it may be subjected to a post-forming operation by an embossing tooling which acts on the bottom of the troughs of the structure along the lines bounding the flanks of the troughs, Figs. 21 and 22 (not shown).
