Abstract

216,072. Wood, S. Hill-. Jan. 9, 1923. Moulding wheel tyres.-Relates to the manufacture of hollow elastic tyres, such for example, as described in Specification 213,971, [Class 144 (ii), Wheel tyres, Pneumatic &c.], by joining the ends of a cut length of extruded, uncured rubber and vulcanizing in a steam-jacketed mould under internal air pressure, and consists in supplying the compressed air from a heated reservoir. The reservoir, which may comprise a steam heated vessel, is preferably heated to a temperature below that of the steam in the mould jacket, and the pressure therein is regulated in accordance with the size or thickness of tyre. A twopart mould for vulcanizing the tyre comprises interengaging sections 10, 11 having steam jackets 19, the hot compressed air being admitted to the core of the tyre through a tube 25 furnished with a flange 26 engaging the inner wall of the mould. The tread ring 15 is furnished with a projection 16 to form a circumferential recess in the tyre.
