Ball bearing; yielding supports.-Motion is transmitted from one rotating member to another by means of a ball bearing, the races of which are secured to the driving members; one of the races is loaded in the axial direction and the ball bearing constitutes the sole. driving medium between the two members. As applied to the spindle and spool of a spinning machine the spool-carrying member 7 closely surrounds without touching the spindle 1 and is supported solely by the outer race 5 of a ball bearing 8, the inner race 4 being carried by a sleeve 2 splined to the spindle. A brake disk 9 is provided and longitudinal adjustment of the sleeve 2 is effected through any suitable thrust bearing such as the lower ball bearing shown, which permits movement in a plane at right agles to the axis of rotation to provide for flexure or eccentricity of the spindle at certain speeds, an elastic buffer being provided to damp out extreme oscillations as described in Specification 200,452. The bearing is arranged in an annular two part housing 13 carried by the usual bracket giving longitudinal motion to the spool, the inner race 10 being rigidly mounted on the lower end of the sleeve 2 whilst the outer race 11 is supported between the rigid casing top 12 and a plate 14 backed up by a spring 14<a>, the outer race being also surrounded by a. ring 15 of felt, rubber, &c. fitting either against the outside of the race or against the annular wall of the casing. The sleeve 2 instead of being a sliding fit on the spindle may be provided with enlarged ends and supported by collars with rubber or other resilient packing material interposed, one of the enlarged ends being detachable to facilitate assemblage, &c.
