Abstract
A safety device for electric window regulators is proposed in which a pneumatic sensor 16, 17 is disposed on the automobile door, and when compressed causes reversal of the direction of rotation of the electric motor, and consequently also of the direction of travel of the window pane. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Safety device for electric window regulators
This invention relates to a safety device for those slidable window panes in automobile doors which are operated by preferably electric actuators.
Devices for raising and/or lowering window panes mounted in automobile doors are known which use electric motors combined with a mechanism for moving the window panes, in which emergency blocking of the upward movement of the window pane is obtained by means of a resistor which overheats when a load exceeding a predetermined threshold value is applied to the window pane. When the resistor overheats it causes interruption of the electricity supply to the motor.
However, the sensitivity of these devices is fairly low, and the load which has to be applied to the window pane in order to block it is high, as is therefore the risk of accident to a user who for example inadvertently inserts part of his body between the window pane and door frame.
The object of the present invention is to obviate said drawbacks and/or accidents by proposing a safety device which is of simple construction but reliable operation, and is able to instantaneously block the electric actuator which drives the window pane upwards and to immediately reverse its travel direction if a foreign body accidentally becomes placed between the rising window pane and the frame of the automobile door.
The present invention therefore provides a safety device for electric window regulators of an automobile door of the type comprising a lower box part containing the window regulator mechanism and an upper part defined by a frame in which there is inserted a seal gasket inside which the edges of the window pane are slidably housed, said safety device being characterised by a pneumatic sensor constituted by at least one tube of deformable material filled in a sealed manner with a fluid and disposed on a part of the inner perimeter of the frame, said tube being operationally connected to an electropneumatic switch connected to means arranged to cause reversal of the polarity of the power supply to the electric motor for operating the window regulator mechanism.
For example, if a hand is interposed between the rising window pane and its frame, the pneumatic sensor constituted by the tube, which could advantageously be of rubber construction, is squeezed and causes compression of the air contained in its interior. This pressure increase acts on the electropneumatic switch, and consequently the control means constituted for example by a relay reverse the polarity of the power supply to the electric motor so that the window pane immediately begins to descend automatically until it stops in its maximum lowered-position.
The characteristics and advantages of the - present invention will be more apparent from the non-limiting description of one embodiment thereof, given hereinafter and illustrated on the diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows the arrangement of the pneumatic sensor on the automobile door;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the sensor shown in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a modification in which the pneumatic sensor is an integral part of the window pane seal gasket;
Figure 4 is a view of the electrical supply diagram for the electric operating motor for the window pane.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the reference numeral 10 indicates the lower part of an automobile door indicated overall by 11, and the reference numeral 12 indicates overall the upper part of said door. The reference numeral 1 3 indicates the sheet metal frame in which the seal gasket 14 of the window pane 1 5 is disposed, and 16 and 1 7 indicate the rubber sensor tubes provided respectively with a flange 18 and 1 9 for their fixing to the frame 13. One end of said sensor tubes 16, 1 7 is hermetically sealed and the other end is connected to an electropneumatic switch 26. The sensor tubes are filled with air.In Fig. 3 the reference numeral 1 3 indicates the door frame, and the reference numeral 20 indicates overall the seal gasket for the window pane 1 5 and which in this case incorporates-the two sensor tubes 16' and 17' and the two flanges 23 and 24 which are mounted over the sheet metal edges 21 and 22 of the frame 13.
In Fig. 4, the reference numeral 25 indicates a connection tube which connects the sensor tubes 1 6 and 1 7 to the electromagnetic switch, indicated overall by 26, which contains a diaphragm 27 operationally connected to a strip 28 which makes or breaks contact between the earth line 29 and the line 30. The reference numeral 31 indicates overall an inverter switch to which positive current is fed by way of the line 32 and which is earthed at 33. The inverter 31 is connected by way of the lines 35 and 36 to triple change-over relay indicated overall by 34 and shown by dashed lines. The output lines 37 and 38 from the relay are connected to an electric motor 39, and the output lines 30 and 40 from the electropneumatic switch 26 are also connected to the relay 34.
In the triple change-over relay 34, which is of known type, the fixed contacts are indicated by 42 and 43, the strip contacts are indicated by 44 and the relay coil is indicated by 45.
If for example the side 41 of the inverter 31 is pressed, positive current reaches the motor 39 by way of the line 35, the contact 43, the strip 44 and the line 37, and the lines 36 and 38 complete the circuit by earthing it by way of the contact 43 and strip 44. In this manner, the motor begins to rotate in a predetermined direction to raise the window pane. If however the electropneumatic switch 26 is simultaneously closed to establish electrical communication between the line 30, strip 28 and the line 29, the coil 45 becomes energised and the strips 44 all return simultaneously towards the contacts 42 to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor 39 and lower the window pane, by virtue of the fact that the line 38 becomes fed with positive current and the line 37 becomes connected to earth. If for example a foreign body becomes interposed between the upper edge of the window pane 1 5 and the frame 1 3 while the window pane is rising, at least one of the sensor tubes 16 and 1 7 becomes squeezed.
In this manner the air pressure inside said tube increases and the pressure is transmitted to the electropneumatic switch 26, which by way of the diaphragm 27 and contact 28 closes the electrical circuit comprising the relay 34, which becomes energised and reverses the-power supply polarity of the electric motor 39. The window pane 1 5 consequently reverses its direction of travel and begins to descend.
