Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO POWER-OPERATED CAR WINDOW WINDING MECHANISMS (71) We, TIIOMAS ANTHONY DONALD CROOK, FRANCIS SYDNEY DERHAM, both British subjects, of Bristol Cars, Filton, Bristol BS99 7AR and Bristol Cars Limited, 368770 Kensington High Street, London W14 8NL, a British company, partners trading as Bristol Cars do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to motor vehicles of the kind having a door incorporating power-operated window winding mechanism.
According to the invention in such a vehicle the window is arranged so that in the fully up position it enters into channellike sealong means separate from the door and control means are arranged automatically to move the window clear of the sealing means before more than a small pressure is applitd to the sealing means if, with the door closed and the window in the fully up position, a door opening movement is initiated.
The control means may be arranged to respond, for example, to actuation of the internal door latch handle or a part thereof or to actual initial opening movement of the door. They may in addition be arranged to respond to actuation of an external control member which could, for example, be either the external door latch handle or the door locking key.
According to a preferred feature of the invcntion power de-energising means are arranged automatically to de-energise the power means when the window has moved from the fully up position to an intermediate position between the fully up and the fully open position.
Further features of the invention will appear from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings where there is shown a preferred arrangement according to the invention as applied to a car with a detachable roof.
Figure 1 is a general view of the relevant part of the car, Figure 2 is a section on the line AA of Figure 1, whilst Figure 3 is a diagrammatic electric layout.
Referring now to the drawings, the detachable roof portion 10 incorporates interior and exterior flexible window sealing strips 11 and 12 respectively and the window 13 is arranged to sit between the two strips when in the fully up position.
The window is actuated through linkage 14 coupled to a reversible electric motor 15 which is controlled by a manually operated interior "Up/Down " switch 16, " and "Down" circuit breakers 17 and 18 respectively being provided for automatically de-energising the motor in the event of overload arising, for example, due to jamming of the window.
In accordance with the invention the window 13 is arranged automatically to be moved downwards a short distance to clear the sealing strip 12 if the door should be opened, from either the inside or the outside of the car, with the window in the fully up position. To this end the internal door latch handle 19 and the mechanically coupled external door latch handle 20 are both arranged to operate a microswitch 21 immediately any attempt is made to open the door. The microswitch controls a relay 22 whereby the motor 15 energised for movement of the window in the downward direction. A microswitch 23 in the door deenergises the motor automatically via a relay 24 when the window has moved down approximately 12 inches.
If the door should be reclosed with the window in this position a microswitch 25 in the door pillar senses the door closed condition and, via a relay 26, energises the motor 15 in a sense to cause the window to be moved to the fully up position. A further microswitch 27 senses the window fully up position and, via a relay 28, deenergises the motor.
The sealing strips 11 and 12 are sufficiently flexible to allow opening or closing of the door without damage to the window with the window in the fully up position if there is any malfunctioning of the electrical equipment or if, for example, the window should be moved to the fully up position by operation of the interior switch 16 with the door open.
The microswitch 21 could alternatively be actuated from outside the car by the door locking key instead of by the external door latch handle, whilst still being operable from inside the car by the internal door latch handle.
The internal switch 16 can of course be used to over-ride the automatic control whereby the window may be set to any desired position with the door either open or closed.
In an alternative arrangement the switch 21, instead of being operated by the door latch handles, is mounted in the door frame so as to respond to an initial opening movement of the door insufficient to cause more than a small pressure on the sealing strip 12 and the switch 25, instead of responding to closure of the door, is arranged to be manually operated from outside the car.
In this arrangement the window will still move automatically downwards to the intermediate position but movement to the fully up position will be under manual control as initiated either by the externally operated switch or, from within the car, by the interior Up/Down switch 16.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A motor vehicle of the kind having a door incorporating power-operated window winding mechanism, wherein the window is arranged so that in the fully up position it enters into channel-like sealing means separate from the door, and including control means arranged automatically to move the window clear of the sealing means before more than a small pressure is applied to the sealing means if, with the door closed and the window in the fully up position, a door opening movement is initiated.
2. A motor vehicle according to Claim 1 wherein the control means are arranged to respond to actuation of the internal door latch handle or a part thereof.
3. A motor vehicle according to Claim 1 wherein the control means are arranged to respond to actual initial opening movement of the door.
4. A motor vehicle according to any preceding Claim wherein the control means are also arranged to respond to actuation of an externally operable control member.
5. A motor vehicle according to Claim 4 wherein the externally operable control member comprises the external door latch handle.
6. A motor vehicle according to Claim 4 wherein the externally operable control member comprises the door locking key.
7. A motor vehicle according to any preceding Claim including power de-energising means arranged automatically to de-energise the power means when the window has moved from the fully up position to an intermediate position between the fully up and the fully open position.
8. A motor vehicle according to any preceding claim including door position responsive means arranged to energise the power means whereby to cause automatic movement of the window to the fully up position on closure of the door with the window in the intermediate position.
9. A motor vehicle according to any of Claims 1-7 including an externally operable control member for energising the power means a sense to move the window to the fully up position 10. A motor vehicle according to any preceding Claim including an internally operable over-riding control member for energising the power means whereby to cause movement of the window in either direction to any desired position.
1I. A motor vehicle according to any preceding claim wherein the power means comprises an electric motor coupled by a mechanical linkage to the window.
12. A motor vehicle according to Claim 1 substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
