Abstract
A window or door frame includes a slot for water drainage, and associated therewith a cover having a water drainage channel, one end of which can be closed by a flap valve normally held open under its own weight.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Window or door having a water drainage means for the fixed frame or the frame of the moveable leaf
This invention relates to a window or a door having a fixed frame provided with water drainage means which includes in the outside wall of the bottom frame member a slot in which engage retaining tongue portions of a cover cap which extends the water drain slot downwardly. A window or a door of that kind is known (German utility model No. 81 20338) wherein the cover cap is formed with integral retaining tongue portions of plastics material, and the water drainage channel is constantly open.
In that construction, under certain weather conditions, air can flow from the outside inwardly through the water drainage channel and can urge the water back into the bottom frame member.
It is known from US patent specification No 3 503 169 for a water drainage means to be provided in the lower horizontal frame member of the fixed frame of a sliding window, with a valve flap being associated with the drain opening of the water drainage channel or passage. The valve flap is in the form of an extruded member and in the region of its upper edge is rotatably connected to a web portion of the fixed frame member which is in the form of a hollow chamber-type member. Adjacent the rotary axis, the valve flap has a shaped web portion which extends in the direction of the outside of the window and which forms a counterweight which seeks to hold the valve flap in the closure position.The water must reach a certain level, in the internal chamber in the lower fixed frame member even when there are balanced air pressure conditions inside and outside, relative to the valve flap, in order to build up a pressure which causes the valve flap, which is loaded by counterweights, to move into the open position. When balanced pressure conditions obtain, there is always a certain level of water present within the chamber in the frame member, when the valve flap is closed.
The present invention aims to provide a window or a door of the kind set forth in the opening part of this specification in which, under the effect of gusts of wind which occur at the outside of the window or the door, the water drainage channel can be closed by a valve flap which is held in the open position under normal weather conditions and which permits venting of the water drainage system in orderforthe chamber in the frame member to dry out completely.
According to the present invention there is provided a window or door having a fixed frame provided with water drainage means which includes in the outside wall of the bottom frame member a slot in which engage retaining tongue portions of a cover cap which extends the water drain slot downwardly, said cover cap having a water drainage channel whose inside end can be closed by a valve flap which is arranged in the interior of the cover cap and which is in the form of a flat plate whose bottom free edge is movably mounted on a guide surface of the cover cap, and the cover cap, for the open position of the valve flap, is provided with abutment surfaces against which the valve flap is held under the effect of its own weight.
As soon as the air pressure relative to the valve flap is balanced inside and outside, the plate-like valve flap moves under its own weight into the open position so that the water in the chamber within the frame member can flow away in its entirety. With a rising external air pressure, the valve flap is moved into the closed position by the air flow within the cover cap, so that the air flow cannot penetrate into the water drainage channel or duct.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view in section of tne lower horizontal fixed frame member of a sliding window, which is provided with a water drainage means according to the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-section of the cover cap which is fixed to the outside of the frame member in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a cross-section taken along the line Ill-Ill indicated on Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a cross-section taken along the line lV-lV indicated on Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a section taken along the line V-V indicated on Figure 2.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the fixed frame of a sliding window has a lower horizontal fixed frame member 1 in the form of an extruded member provided with vertical rails 2 on which are supported the rollers (not shown) of sliding windows 3 and 4. The fixed frame member 1 has an internal chamber 5 in which rain water is collected. The rain water can flow from the rabbet region of the fixed frame member 1 through a slot or slots 6 into the chamber 5.
Provided in the outside wall 7 of the fixed frame member 1, is a water drainage opening in the form of a slot or slots 8 which has its lower edge at the level of the upper surface of the bottom wall 9 of the internal chamber 5. Associated with the slot 8 is a cover cap 10 which opens or has a water discharge opening directed in a downward direction and which is fixed to the frame member 1 by retaining tongue portions 11 which extend into the slot 8 and which have retaining projections 12 which engage behind the inside edge portion of the slot 8.
The cover cap 10 comprises two parts, more specifically a fixing part 13 and a hood 14. The fixing part 13 and the hood 14 are joined together by welding or by an adhesive.
The fixing part 13 which is provided with the retaining tongue portions 11 is provided on the fixing side 15 with recesses 16 for receiving sealing material.
The cover cap 10 is provided with a water drain channel or duct 17 which is of oval cross-section and which is partially delimited by extension portions 18 which extend beyond the fixing side 15 and which engage into the slot 8 in the frame member 1.
The inside opening 19 of the water drainage channel 17 is defined by an edge surface 20 which forms an abutment surface for a valve flap 21 in the closed position therof, as shown in dash-dotted lines in Figure 2.
The edge surface 20 is in the form of an inclined surface which extends downwardly and towards the fixing side 15.
The valve flap 21 is in the form of a flat plate and has a range of movement which corresponds to the range of an acute angle.
The bottom free edge of the valve flap 21 is mounted movably on a guide surface 22 of the cover cap 10.
In the illustrated embodiment, it will be seen from
Figure 3 in which the valve flap 21 is shown in dashdotted lines, that at its bottom free edge the valve flap 21 has a central recess 23 which is of a Ushaped configuration and which is disposed between end portions 24, the bottom edges of which bear against the guide surface 22.
The open position of the valve flap 21 which is shown in Figure 2 in solid lines is defined by abutment surfaces 25 which are parts of projections 26 provided on the hood 14, the projections 26 extending into the space inside the cover cap 10.
In the region of the upper edge 27 of the valve flap 21,the valve flap is freely moveable between an abutment surface 28 and the edge surface 20.
When there is equal pressure as between the front
side and the rear side of the valve flap 21, the valve flap, under the influence of its own weight, moves
into the open position in which water can escape from the water drainage channel 17 through an
opening 29 in the floor of the cover cap 10.
