Abstract
A sealing grommet to be fitted in a bodywork opening for leads to pass through, has a grommet body 5 (upper part of Figure 1) which consists of a resilient plastics material and is provided with a sealing lip which is to be held against the bodywork surface surrounding the opening by way of a catch. In to the sealing grommet there is inserted, snapped or moulded a reinforcement member 10 of more rigid plastics material, such that it supports the sealing lip 5 from the inside by means of a flange portion 9 and extends beyond the annular groove 6 corresponding to the bodywork opening to form an easily snapped-in catch 10. Alternatively, a bayonet or screw fixing may be used. The plastics bellows 1 may be integral with the body 5, or may be omitted. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION
Sealing grommet to be fitted in bodywork openings for leads and the like to pass through in a protected manner
The invention relates to a sealing grommet to be fitted in bodywork openings for leads and the like to pass through in a protected manner. The invention is particularly applicable to openings in motor vehicle bodies.
A sealing boot for ball-and-socket joints or the like is known from the German Auslegeschrift (Published Specification) 1 266 074, in which a reinforcement ring of a plastics material with good sliding properties is integrally formed at one end of the sealing boot consisting of a different, resilient plastics material. This reinforcement ring supports the sealing boot with respect to a shaft surrounded by the sealing boot.
A cable grommet or socket is known from the
German Patent 2 022 879, which consists of a heatshrinkable plastics material. Adjacent to a sealing flange, the grommet is provided with tongueshaped portions which secure the cable grommet or socket in a bodywork opening after the application of heat.
Of the two known arrangements, the first provides no suggestion for securing the sealing boot and in the case of the second a heat treatment is necessary in order to secure the cable grommet.
In addition, in the case of sealing boots and cable grommets it is generally customary to form, adjacent to the outer sealing lip, a conical catch extension which is separated by an annular groove corresponding to the bodywork opening and by means of which the sealing bellows or the cable grommet or socket respectively may be snapped into a bodywork opening. The resilient plastics material of the sealing bellows orthe cable sleeve or socket respectively has made this snapping procedure a difficult assembly operation, in particular in restricted access conditions.
In motor vehicles such sealing bellows, cable grommets or cable sockets are required in particular in the region of the end faces of motor vehicle doors for electrical leads to pass through in a protected manner, for example for a central locking arrangement, and in the region of the edges of the body closures of the motor vehicle for electrical lines to pass through in a protected manner, for example for a tail gate window wiper, or for water pipes for a tail gate window washing apparatus to pass through.
According to the invention, there is provided a sealing grommet to be fitted in a bodywork opening for leads and the like to pass through in a protected manner, the grommet having a body of a resilient plastics material which is provided with a sealing lip, and a catch extension which, in use, holds thejip so that it seals against the bodywork surface surrounding a bodywork opening, the catch extension comprising a reinforcement ring of plastics material which is more rigid than the material of the body so that it supports the sealing lip from the inside with a flange portion and extends beyond an annular groove corresponding to the bodywork opening and is in the form of an easily snapped-in catch extension.
Further advantageous developments of the invention are set out in Claims 2 to 4.
By virtue of the fact that in the sealing grommet, where it fits into the bodywork opening, there is inserted, snapped in or moulded in in known manner a reinforcement ring of more rigid plastics material in such a way that it supports the sealing lip from the inside with a flange portion and extends beyond the annular groove corresponding to the bodywork opening and is in the form of an easily snapped-in catch extension, it is considerably simpler to insert the grommet in the bodywork opening than was possible in the case of a catch extension made of the same resilient plastics material as the grommet body.
The grommet may be a simple grommet, or it may form one end of a sealing bellows which has another grommet at its other end and provides a passage for e.g. wires between two relatively movable bodywork components.
The invention is described in greater detail with reference to one example of embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a sealing bellows which at its end at the bottom on the lefthand side of the Figure is formed with a conventional catch extension as known from the prior art, while at its end at the top at the right-hand side it is provided with a catch extension according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is an elevation of the sealing bellows according to Figure 1 viewed in the direction of the arrow 11 in Figure 1.
A sealing bellows 1 comprises two end grommet portions 2 and 3 which are each at an angle of 900 to the main part of the bellows and which are connected to one another by way of a bellowsshaped central portion 4. The sealing bellows 1 consists in known manner of a resilient plastics material and at its lower end has the grommet portion 2 which comprises in known manner an outer sealing lip 5, an annular groove 6 corresponding to the bodywork opening and a conical catch extension 7 adjacent to the said annular groove 6. A sealing bellows 1 of this type previously consisted only of one and the same relatively soft resilient plastics material, as a result of which the fitting of the conical catch extension 7 in a bodywork opening is more difficult on account of the deformation of the soft resilient plastics material which occurs in the process.
In the end grommet portion 3, a reinforcement ring 8 of a more rigid plastics material is inserted, snapped or moulded into the sealing bellows 1. The reinforcement ring 8 of the more rigid plastics material is provided with a flange portion 9 which supports the outer sealing lip 5 from the inside. The reinforcement ring 8 extends beyond the annular groove 6 corresponding to the bodywork opening and is in the form of an easily snapped-in catch extension 10 which in the embodiment shown is formed by four resilient catch tongues 12 uniformly distributed on the periphery and separated from the rest of the catch extension by U-shaped slots 11.
Depending upon the circumstances at the particular assembly position, the catch extension 10 may have widely differing snap-in clip forms. In certain cases it is possible for the catch extension 10 to be designed in the form of a bayonet catch or in the form of a screw plug, it then being necessary of course for the corresponding bodywork opening to be designed in the form of a bayonet receiving opening or Prestol thread impression.
The sealing bellows 1 in the drawings has different end grommet portions purely to facilitate illustration of the invention. In practice, a bellows will have end grommet protions as at 3 at both ends.
The invention also extends to a plain grommet, without any bellows portion 4.
Claims (6)
1. Asealing grommetto befitted in a bodywork opening for leads and the like to pass through in a protected manner, the grommet having a body of a resilient plastics material which is provided with a sealing lip, and a catch extension which, in use, holds the lip so that it seals against the bodywork surface surrounding a bodywork opening, the catch extension comprising a reinforcement ring of plastics material which is more rigid than the material of the body so that it supports the sealing lip from the inside with a flange portion and extends beyond an annular groove corresponding to the bodywork opening and is in the form of an easily snapped-in catch extension.
2. A sealing grommet as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the catch extension is provided with a plurality of resilient catch tongues separated from the rest of the extension by U-shaped slots.
3. A sealing grommet as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the catch extension is in the form of a bayonet catch.
4. A sealing grommet as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the catch extension is in the form of a screw plug.
5. A sealing grommet substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. A sealing bellows having a sealing grommet as claimed in any preceding claim at at least one end thereof.
