Brakes, arrangement and disposition of. - An auxiliary contracting brake for operation in conjunction with, and acting upon, the exterior of the same drum as the usual internal expanding brake of a motor vehicle, particularly of the Ford type, is arranged to be directly connected to the existing brake rod provided for connection to the cam lever of the internal brake which is instead connected to or engaged by the lever of the external brake. The auxiliary brake band 18 has its ends 20, 21 connected to a two-armed lever 9 on a spindle 8 passing through bosses 7, Fig. 3, on a bracket 1 which has a hole and a slotted end 5 by which it is fixed to the disc on the axle casing by the bolts 4 which secure the radius rod 2. Studs 6 are also provided on the bracket to contact with the disc. The band is supported by two spring-urged pins 19 passing through a member 16 which is secured by the bolt 17 upon which the internal brake shoes are pivoted and is held further by the engagement of one of the ribs 16 on the disc in a, groove in the member. The spindle 8 carries an operating arm 10 to which the existing rod 15 is connected at 11 and this arm is adapted to engage the cam lever 12 of the internal brake so that this brake is applied after the band brake has come into operation. In a modified arrangement, the bracket 1 is inverted so that the spindle 8 and arm 9 are carried above the radius rod 2 and the end of the arm 10 and the rod 15 are below the rod 2. In this case the arm 10 is connected by a link to the cam lever 12 and the two brakes are brought into operation simultaneously.
