Abstract

An injection pump (5) is provided with a pulse generator (2) which delivers a pulse, fixed in relation to the injection pump shaft (7). The pulse from the generator (2) is timed to occur at a predetermined interval from a second pulse, fixed in relation to the engine crank-shaft, when the pump is properly installed on the engine. The interval between the two pulses is arranged to be equal to a crankshaft angle of 5 DEG . The setting of this value in the injection pump (5) is effected by turning a part (8), which is mounted on the camshaft (7) of the injection pump (5), relative to the said pump camshaft, the rotatable part (8) supporting an elevated portion (6) which triggers the pulse of the injection pump (5). The desired interval of approximately 5 DEG allows reliable measurements to be taken. In addition, a reduction in expenditure on measuring devices is achieved as a result of the simple adjustability of the rotatable part (8) relative to the injection pump camshaft (7). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method and apparatus for setting and checking the commencement of delivery in an air-compressing, fuel-injection internal combustion engines.
The invention relates to a method for setting and checking the commencement of delivery in an air-compressing, fuel-injection internal combustion engine having a fuel injection pump, by means of which the interval between a pulse obtained from the engine crankshaft and a pulse obtained from the fuelinjection pump can be measured and set to a determined value.
German Offenlegungsschrift No. 29 49 018 discloses a method by means of which the desired value, equal to a crankshaft angle of approximately 2", is indicated as the optimum desired interval between the crankshaft pulse and the injection pump pulse. When carrying out this particular method, errors which occur with individual engines, whether they be caused by changes in amplitude, by compression variations or chain elongation after prolonged operating time, and also setting errors in the injection pump can be compensated for by means of analyzers. In practice, however, it has happened repeatedly that the analyzers caused a failure in indication or an error in the indication.
The problem underlying the invention is to make the method more reliable and to reduce the expenditure associated with the known method, without adversely affecting measuring accuracy.
According to the invention, a method is provided for setting and checking the commencement of delivery in an air-compressing fuel-injection internal combustion engine having a fuel-injection pump, in which the actual interval between a pulse, determined in relation to the crankshaft, and a pulse, determined in relation to the injection pump shaft, is measured and indicated and in which to set a desired interval between two pulses in an injection pump in which an elevated portion for triggering the pulse of the injection pump is arranged on a part which is rotatable with the injection pump shaft, the relative rotational position between the elevated portion and the pulse generator of the injection pump is changed, wherein the desired interval between the crankshaft-determined pulse, and the injection pump shaft-determined pulse is substantially equal to 5" and the setting of this value in the injection pump is effected by adjusting the rotatable part relative to the injection pump camshaft.
The invention also provides an apparatus for carrying out the method according to the invention, in which the rotatable part which supports the pulse-triggering elevated portion comprises a centrifugal weight carrier of a mechanical governor of the injection pump and is frictionally mounted on the injection pump shaft.
According to another aspect of this invention, the centrifugal weight carrier is provided with a location hole which corresponds to the conically shaped end of the injection pump camshaft, and the centrifugal weight carrier is non-rotatably connected to the shaft by a fastening nut.
It has been found that the actual interval, which is caused by erroneous or incorrect setting of the fuel-injection pump and possibly by wear, is greater than a crankshaft angle of 2". As a result of this, the sequence of the pulses between the injection pump side can be reversed, which gives rise to indication errors in most analyzers and measuring instruments. On the other hand, with specific desired intervals, errors due to torsional oscillations or vibrations of the engine previously become apparent.
The present invention eliminates faults of this kind by the desired interval, of approximately 5" between the crankshaft pulse and the injection pump pulse.
For the application of the method, a standard test value is obtained for all types of Diesel engines and injection pumps, as a result of the fixed desired interval of 5" between the crankshaft pulse and injection pump pulse.
This is particularly advantageous due to the simplification of the test data and the reduced possibility or error during testing. Since in different Diesel engines the commencement of delivery usually varies in relation to the crankshaft angle, the injection pump pulse for maintaining the desired interval of 5" relative to the injection pump shaft must of course be displaced when using a specific type of injection pump for different engines. The rotatable and securable design of that part of the injection pump which is rotatable relative to the injection pump shaft makes possible any required angle of adjustment or range of adjustment which, in the embodiment according to German Offenlegungsschrift 29 49 018, is only limited by displacement of the pulse generator mounting device.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in more detail and by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows, in a diagrammatic view, the overall arrangement of the control pulse generation, Figure 2 shows, the centrifugal weight carrier as a rotatable element on the injection pump camshaft, together with the pulse-triggering elevated portion, and the pulse generator, and Figure 3 shows a side view of the centrifugal weight carrier which has been slid on the injection pump shaft.
To apply the method for setting and testing the commencement of delivery in air-compressing, fuel-injection-type internal combustion engines, there is provided as shown in Fig. 1, on the engine side, a T.D.C. (top-deadcentre) pulse generator 1 cooperating with the crankshaft and, on the injection pump side, a governor pulse generator 2. To check the setting of the commencement of delivery (the FB setting), the pulse of the governor is detected in the running engine by the governor pulse generator 2, which is in the form of an induction generator, and associated with the T.D.C. pulse of the crankshaft. The governor pulse is transformed in an adaptor 3 and can be further processed by a conventional petrol engine ignition angel measuring device 4.
The test value is obtained as a result of the position of the T.D.C. pulse in the case of a crank angle (KW) of 20 after T.D.C. and from the necessary interval equal to a crankshaft angle of preferably 5" between the governor pulse and the T.D.C. pulse, and the setting of this value is effected, in the case of an injection pump 5 in which the elevated portion 6 for triggering the injection pump pulse is arranged on a part 8 (Fig. 2) which is in the form of a centrifugal weight carrier and, on the governor side, is connected to the injection pump camshaft 7 and rotatable therewith, by turning the said rotatable part 8 relative to the injection pump camshaft through the desired angle.
The turning action is achieved in a simple manner. By loosening a fastening nut 9 which is screwed on the end of the injection pump camshaft 7, the centrifugal weight carrier 8 may be rotated relative to the shaft 7. The centrifugal weight carrier 8 is provided with a tapered location hole 10 which is adapted to fit the similarly conically shaped end 11 of the injection pump camshaft. After the centrifugal weight carrier 8 is correctly aligned relative to the shaft 7, both parts are rigidly locked together by tightening the fastening nut 9.
