Feeding - appliances for animals.-In a dry feeder in which the food passing through a slot in a hopper is fed into a trough by a rotary member provided with pockets, the rotary member is arranged in an open space below the hopper so that it is accessible to and rotatable by the nose of a pig or other animal. The rotary member shown extends from end to end of the trough and comprises a number of wooden or metal vanes with or without end or shroud plates. It is mounted on a spindle c above a longitudinal ridge which divides the trough into two parts e. An agitator in the hopper may be rotated by engagement with the vanes of the rotary member b. The agitator may consist of sheet-metal plates stamped to form blades h and mounted loosely between distance pieces on a rod i. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, several short and independent rotary members are mounted on the spindle c, washer or shrouds being mounted between them. Screens g are provided to insure that the food delivered by any one feeder shall be delivered only to one part e of the trough. The screens may be arranged alternately on opposite sides as shown for a double-sided trough or all on one side for a single-sided trough; or one screen may extend from end to end of the slot in the hopper. The hopper may be divided into compartments by transverse partitions.
