A laying nest for poultry comprises a trough 1 within which is located a conveyer 2 and chaff 8, and a nest box arranged above the trough and sub-divided by partitions 9 into individual laying comparts each having a floor 10, 11 or 12 inclined downwardly in the direction of movement of the conveyer and arranged so that the lower end of a floor underlies the upper end of the adjacent floor, there being a space 14 through which eggs can roll into the trough. The conveyer 2 comprises a chain 3 on which are arranged cross pieces 4, the conveyer being actuated intermittently.
