1296828 Animal enclosures W POTTER & SONS (POULTRY) Ltd 5 Dec 1969 [12 Dec 1968] 59111/68 Heading AIM An animal retaining closure e.g. a chicken brooder has a front wall 12 which allows the chickens to reach the contents of a trough 14 while being retained in the brooder. The upper part of wall 12 is formed of wire mesh and at its lower end, a sheet metal plate 15 has apertures 16 which are large enough to allow chickens heads to pass through to the trough 14 but are too small to allow chickens' bodies through. A wire gate 17, held to wall 12 by studs 18, prevents chickens from escaping from the brooder. When the chickens grow too large to use the apertures 16 the gate 17 is raised so that further apertures are formed between the bottom of gate 17 and the top of plate 15 and at the sides of pairs of wires 21 of wall 12, the top edge of trough 14 being moved near to the top of plate 15. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), all of wall (12) is a wire mesh. When chickens grow too large to use apertures 16 in a plate 15 the plate is raised thus uncovering apertures in wall 12 which are suitable for retaining larger chickens while allowing them to feed from the trough 14.
