Abstract
There is described equipment for rolling ploughed fields at sowing, the equipment being in the form of a frame 1 having roller discs rotatably mounted therein and being adapted to be towed by a tractor. A pair of slave frames 2,3 are connected to the master frame and are movable between a first position (as shown) where the slave frames lie behind the master frame and a second position (Figure 2, not shown) where the slave frames lie generally outside the rolling width of the master frame such as to allow increase in the rolling width of the equipment. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in Rolling Equipment
This invention relates to rolling equipment for use in rolling a ploughed field at sowing.
According to the present invention there is provided rolling equipment comprising a master frame having a number of roller discs rotatably mounted therein, the master frame being adapted to be towed by a tractor, a pair of slave frames each having a number of roller discs rotatably mounted therein and each being connected to said master frame through connecting means and being movable between a first position wherein the slave frames lie behind the master frame with the two slave frames of the pair being in a substantially side-by-side relation and a second position wherein the slave frames lie behind the master frame but generally to the outside of the rolling width of the master frame, and means for moving the slave frames from said first position to said second position thus to increase the rolling width of the equipment.
Preferably, said connecting means are in the form of knuckle joints comprising a pair of interconnected D-shaped members.
Preferably also, said means for moving the slave frames comprise hydraulic rams.
In an alternative embodiment a second pair of slave frame is provided located behind the first pair and connected to respective ones of the first pair by knuckle joints.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of rolling equipment made in accordance with the present invention with the slave frames in the first position;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rolling equipment of Fig. 1 with the slave frames in the second position;
Fig. 3 is a plane view of a modified embodiment of rolling equipment;
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevational view of the connecting means; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the connecting means of Fig. 4.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, rolling equipment comprises a rectangular master frame 1 in which there is rotatably mounted a number of roller discs 10. The master frame 1 is preferably formed of square sectional steel members and is provided with a forwardly extending towing frame 11 adapted to be connected to the towing hitch of a tractor.
A pair of slave frames 2, 3 is provided behind the master frame 1 each being rectangular and having a number of roller discs 20, 30 rotatably mounted in the respective frames 2, 3. Each slave frame has a respective forwardly extending towing frame 21, 31 connected to a respective pivot arm 12, 13 of the main frame 1. The pivot arms are mounted in the main frame to pivot about respective longitudinal horizontal axes 22, 33 under the action of respective hydraulic rams 42, 43 fed by the tractor hydraulics through hydraulic conduits 421,422, 431,432.
The pivot arm 1 3 is connected to its associated towing frame 31 by means of a knuckle joint 53 (Figs. 4 and 5) which comprises a first D-shaped member 54 welded to the extremity 60 of the pivot arm 1 3 and interconnected with a second
D-shaped member 55 fixed to a shaft 56 rotatably mounted in a housing 57 fixed to the end 61 of the towing frame 31. The shaft 56 is held within the housing 57 by means of a roll pin 58 and a fixed washer 59.
The pivot arm 1 2 is connected to its associated towing frame 21 by a similar knuckle joint 52.
The above arrangement allows the pivot arms to move from the position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the slave frames 2, 3 lie directly behind the master frame 1 to the position shown in Fig. 2 wherein the slave frames 2, 3 lie behind but generally outside the rolling width of the master frame 1. During their motion the roller discs 20, 30 of the slave frames 2,3 are always in contact with the ground. Thus, any desired rolling width between these two extremes may be selected.
In Fig. 3 an additional pair of slave frames 4, 5 are provided. The slave frames 4, 5 are connected via towing frames 41, 51 to pivot arms 112, 113 on the first pair of slave frames 2, 3. This connection is made via knuckle joints 1 52, 1 53 similar to the joints illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
Also hydraulic rams 44, 45 effect movement of the second pair of slave frames from a first position directly behind the master frames and first pair of slave frames as illustrated in Fig. 3 to a second position wherein the second pair of slave frames lie generally outside the rolling width of the first pair.
To equalise the towing forces, the towing frames 41, 51 of the second pair of slave frames 4, 5 are offset as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
1. Rolling equipment comprising a master frame having a number of roller discs rotatably mounted therein, the master frame being adapted to be towed by a tractor, a pair of slave frames each having a number of roller discs rotatably mounted therein and each being connected to
said master frame through connecting means and being movable between a first position wherein the slave frames lie behind the master frame with the two slave frames of the pair being in a substantially side-by-side relation and a second position wherein the slave frames lie behind the master frame but generally to the outside of the rolling width of the master frame, and means for moving the slave frames from said first position to said second position thus to increase the rolling width of the equipment.
2. Rolling equipment as claimed in claim 1, wherein said connecting means are in the form of
