Abstract

213,733. Mossay, P. A. H., and Makower, A. J. Feb. 19, 1923. Electrically-propelled road cars.- Relates to a portable crane comprising two units 1, 2 pivotally connected at 3, 3, the unit 2 carrying the crane proper being provided with road wheels 4 on which it can make slueing movements relatively to the unit 1. The wheels 4 may be driven by independent electric or other motors which may effect (a) movement of the crane as a whole, (b) slueing about one of the wheels 4 which is braked whilst the other wheel is driven, or (c) slueing relatively to the unit 1 by driving the wheels 4 in opposite directions. The unit 1 may be provided with wheels or skids. The current may be supplied by a tracting cable wound on a drum 60. Part of the cable, or a separate steel cable, may be wound around the spindle 61 of the drum, and fixed to the structure at 62, forming a loop in which hang a weight 63 keeping the trailing cable taut. The Provisional Specification describes also modifications in which (a) one motor drives one or both road wheels of the crane unit 2 and the wheels of the unit 1 are steering wheels, and (b) the motors are driven by storage batteries which act as a counterweight for the ,crane.
