Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears; valve spindles ; beat or lift valves; slide valves, flat.-The inlet and exhaust of internal-combustion engines are controlled by slide valves 2 which have transverse play between the ports and sliding surfaces in front of and behind the valves. The valves 2 have each one or more lateral extensions to prevent warping, and slide alternately on opposed faces 15<b>, 23 on the covers 7 and seats of the plate boxes 6 in which they are mounted. Recesses 19, 21 are provided in the plates 6 and the cylinder wall to receive dirt scraped off the guiding-surfaces. The valves carry bored blocks to loosely engage the bent ends of the actuating-rods 3 which are guided in sleeves 5 seated in slotted angle-iron supports 4 and are recessed at their ends to engage projections 8 on the tappet rods 10. The movements of the valves to and from the opposed seats are controlled by the pressure in the cylinder, and the valves are moved longitudinally when the pressure on the valves is a minimum. Each valve may have a slot and two bars controlling two admission or exhaust ports. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the application of the mechanism to engines other than internalcombustion engines. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
