Cam-gears; beat or lift valves.-In engines having separate inlet and exhaust lift valves 5, 9 directly operated by central oscillating cam-shafts 16, to avoid side thrust of the valve-spindle on their guides, the valves are off-set so that the opening pressure of the cams 16 acts along the valve axes. The inlet or exhaust valves are arranged vertically above the cylinder and the other valves, laterally thereof; the axes of the valves are parallel to and equidistant from the cylinder axes.
