Description
SPECIFICATION
Flue terminal and structure comprising same
From one aspect, the present invention relates to a flue terminal. Flue terminals are provided at the discharge ends of flues to inhibit the admission of rain and wind to the flue whilst permitting discharge of flue gases therefrom.
It is common to provide existing chimneys with a pre-formed lining which is either lowered down the chimney or drawn up the chimney. There is normally on an unlined masonry chimney a ceramic pot. Prior to insertion of the lining, this pot is removed and an upper end portion of the lining is secured to a plate which is mounted on the top of the chimney. A flue terminal is then engaged with a portion of the lining which protrudes above the plate and the structure is sealed by mortar which covers the plate, a lower part of the flue terminal and a part of a top surface of the masonry chimney. The provision of this structure, when lining an existing masonry chimney, normally involves removal of an existing chimney pot and associated haunching.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a structure comprising a masonry chimney, a chimney pot mounted on the chimney, a lining disposed at least mainly within the chimney and defining a flue and a terminal connected with the lining at an upper end thereof, wherein the terminal includes a first part disposed outside the pot and a second part extending from the first part downwardly into the pot to the lining, and wherein the first part of the terminal is sealed to the pot.
Since the pot is retained in a structure in accordance with the invention, the task of installing a flue lining and terminal can be carried out more quickly and easily than can the known procedure in which the pot is removed.
The first part of the terminal preferably includes a laterally outwardly projecting flange and elements defining openings at a level above said flange, the flange extending further from a longitudinal axis of the terminal than do said elements. The flange extends over and laterally outwardly from the pot so that the flue terminal can be supported by means of the flange on the pot.
There is also provided in accordance with the invention, a flue terminal comprising a first part including elements, defining outlet openings and a second part suitable for cooperation with an end portion of a flue lining, the first and second parts defining a common longitudinal axis of the terminal, wherein the first part also includes a flange which extends around the axis between said elements and the second part of the terminal and extends further from the axis than do said elements.
An example of a structure in accordance with the first aspect of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein: Figure 1 shows diagrammatically a vertical cross-section through a chimney pot and flue terminal mounted thereon; and
Figures 2, 3 and 4 illustrate diagrammatically modifications of the flue terminal shown in Fig. 1.
The structure illustrated in the drawing includes a ceramic chimney pot 10 of known form which is provided on the top of a masonry chimney (not shown) in the usual manner. There is mounted on the pot a flue terminal 11 having an upper part 1 2 disposed outside the pot and a lower part 1 3 which extends downwardly from the upper part into the pot. The lower part 1 3 has an external diameter somewhat less than the internal diameter of the pot so that there is a clearance space between the flue terminal and the internal surface of the pot.
The structure further comprises a preformed flue lining 14 of known construction which is secured to the lower part 1 3 of the terminal with an upper end portion of the lining overlapping with a lower end portion of the terminal. The flue terminal and lining are preferably connected together before the lining is lowered down through the chimney pot 10 into the chimney. An end portion of the lining is introduced to the lower part of the terminal until the lining abuts the lower ends of posts 21 of the terminal. The terminal and lining are then secured together by means of screws (not shown).
The upper part 1 2 of the flue terminal is of generally known form. The example illustrated includes a cover 1 5 which closes the upper end of the terminal and three annular members 1 6 which are spaced from each other and from the cover to define between these components outlet openings 1 7 through which flue gases can be discharged. The upper part 1 2 of the terminal also includes a laterally outwardly projecting flange 1 8 which is spaced downwardly from the lower member 1 6 to define therewith a further outlet opening 1 9. The flange 1 8 also is of annular form and has a larger external diameter than do the members 1 6 and the cover 1 5. Thus, the flange 1 8 extends further, preferably at least 20mm further, from a longitudinal axis of the terminal than do the members 1 6 and cover 1 5. The diameter of the outer circumference of the flange 1 8 is substantially greater than the outside diameter of the pot 10.
The flange 1 8 defines the lower extremity of the upper terminal part 1 2. The lower part 1 3 is of tubular form and extends downwardly from the inner periphery of the flange. A number of posts 21 extend upwardly from the flange to support the members 1 6 and the cover 1 5. Thus, the entire terminal and the lining 14 are supported by the flange 1 8 which overlies the upper edge of the chimney pot.
The flange 1 8 is bedded on a layer of mortar or mastic composition 22 on the upper edge surface of the chimney pot. This seals the flue terminal to the pot so that the space 23 between the pot and the lining is closed at its upper end. To provide a key for the mortar 22, a layer of expanded metal is secured to the underside of the flange 1 8. A bed of mortar can be applied to this expanded metal before the terminal is carried up to the top of the chimney so that it is unnecessary to carry a supply of mortar separately from the flue terminal to the top of the chimney.
A further quantity of mortar may be applied to the exterior of the lower terminal part 1 3.
This mortar adds weight to the terminal and may also adhere to the internal surface of the pot 10, thereby reducing the risk of the terminal moving relative to the pot. A layer of expanded metal or other means for keying mortar to the flue terminal may be provided on the outside of the lower part 1 3.
It will be noted that the flange 1 8 is inclined downwardly towards its outer periphery to provide shelter for the bedding mortar 22 and to ensure that rain water will not drain from the terminal into the pot over the upper edge surface of the pot. It will be noted that the openings 1 7 and 1 9 lie above any adjacent pots of the same height as that of the pot 10 which may be present on the chimney.
The upper part of the flue terminal may be constructed in an alternative known manner by punching and pressing a sheet of metal to form a number of louvre openings in the metal and then bending the metal into a generally cylindrical configuration, as shown in Fig. 3. The outside diameter of this cylinder would be substantially less than the diameter of the outer periphery of the flange 18 and the upper end of the cylinder would be closed by a cover plate.
The flue terminal incorporated in the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 may be modified by substitution of alternative known upper parts for the upper part 1 2 illustrated in Fig. 1. A variety of alternative upper parts are illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. Only parts of the terminal above the level of the flange 1 8 are affected by these modifications and the nature of the modifications will be apparent to a skilled person from the drawings and his knowledge of known flue terminals. It will be understood that other modifications of the upper part 1 2 of the flue terminal may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
