Description

Feb. 16, 1932. g LE I 1,845,656
CHIMNEY PROTECTOR AND DRAIN Filed April 10, 1929 INVENTOR. Tye-0009s 4. 6/4:
ATTORNEY;
Patented Feb. 16, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THEODORE A. GILE, OF PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T E. G. WILD, OF PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA CHIMNEY PROTECTOR AND DRAIN Application filed April 10,
My invention relates to improven'ients in chimney protectors and drains, and it conin the combinations, constructions and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
Soot and other foreign matter collect on the tops of chimneys, and this is washed down upon the exterior surfaces of the chimneys by rain, which results in staining the 1s chimneys.
The principal object of my invention to provide a catch basin at the top of a chim ney of a size to cover the entire top. This basin is provided with a drain that catches all of the water falling upon the top of the chimney and carries it down the inside of the chimney. This prevents the outer wall of the chimney from becoming stained.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is extremely simple in construction and which is durable and efiicient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanving drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section through a portion of a chimney showing my device applied;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device; and
Figure 3 is a. section along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of a standard chimney which is constructed of brick or other suitable material. The chimney is lined with pipe sections 2. The top of the chimney is dished out as shown at 3 in Figure 1 so that the top surfaces will slope toward the center of the chimney.
In the present drawings I have shown the r chimney as being rectangular in cross section. I thcreit'ore provide a catch basin 4 that is rectangular and shaped so as to cover the entire top of the chimney. The bottom walls 5 at the l'iasin l slope downwardly and conform with the slope of the top portions 1929. Serial No. 354,122.
3. A flange 6 projects upwardly from the outer edge of the basin and extends entirely around the device. A second flange 7 extends upwardlyfrom the bottom 5 and is shaped so as to provide an opening 8 that conforms with the chimney lining 2.
The device is placed upon the top of the chimney as shown in Figure 1, and the flange 7 engages with the lining 2 while the flange 6 coincides with the exterior surface of the chimney.
An outlet pipe 9 leads from the bottom 5 as shown in Figure 3, and this is connected to a drain pipe 10 that is shown in Figure 1 as extending down between the lining 2 and the chimney brick 1. The pipe 10 may lead directly to the basement or to a roof gutter. A screen 11 (see Figure 2) covers the opening in the pipe 9.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
Soot and other foreign matter is collected in the catch basin 4. and when any rain occurs, it is washed into the drain pipe 10. All of the water falling upon the top of the chimney is caught by the basin and is carried to the pipe 10. In this way the foreign matter is prevented from flowing down the exterior surface of the chimney and marring it. The screen 11 prevents the pipe 10 from becoming clogged.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes, and I reserve the right to employ such changes as may come within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. The combination with a chimney having its top provided with sloping surfaces extending downwardly at a slight angle toward the center of? the chimney, a catch basin having "its bottom provided with sloping surfaces abuttable against the sloping surfaces of the chimney, said basin being provided with an upwardly-extending flange that coincides with the outer walls of the chimney, and an inner flange that coincides with the opening in the chimney and a drain pipe leading from the catch basin down the inside of the chimney.
2. The combination with a chimney having the top provided with sloping surfaces ex tending downwardly at a slight angle toward the center of the chimney, a catch basin having its bottom provided with sloping surfaces abuttable against the sloping surfaces of the chimney, said basin being provided with an upwardly-extending flange that coincides with the outer walls of the chimney and an inner flange that coincides with the opening in the chimney, a drain pipe leading from the catch basin down the inside of the chimney, and a screen covering the entrance to the drain pipe.
3. The combination with a chimney lined with pipe sections that extend above the chimney top, of a catch basin disposed on the chimney top and having a central opening with upwardly extending flanged edges that received the pipesections, an outer upwardly extending flange that forms a continuation of the outer surface of the chimney and means for draining the basin.
4. An article of manufacture comprising a catch basin for chimney tops having an inclined bottom gently sloping downwardly toward the center of the basin, said basin having an opening with flanged edges and an upstanding rim at its outer edges, said basin also having a water outlet opening disposed adjacent to one of the flanged edges.
5. The combination with a chimney having a top sloping downwardly from all sides toward the center of the chimney, of a catch basin having a sloping bottom conforming to the'chimney top, an outer rim lying flush with the chimney exterior and an inner upwardly extending flange conforming with the chimney opening, and a water outlet opening disposed adjacent to the inner flange.
6. The combination with a chimney, of a catch basin mounted on the chimney top and having a central opening, an upwardly projecting flange extending along the edge of the opening, and a vertical flange disposed around the outer margin of the basin and forming a continuation of the outer walls of the chimney and lying flush with the latter.
